<![CDATA[What's wrong with the doctors nowadays??]]>Kinda missed my old doctor near my parents' place... If you go to her with a cold, she will prepare cough, phelgm, etc medicine even if you haven't showed the symptoms yet. Of course a bit expensive but well worth it.

My current place has 4 clinics but sadly, 3 of them can't make it.
The last one has a long waiting time, average about 1 hour....

Just went to 1 of the clinics with running nose + blocked nose. Doctor just gave a few meds. I asked for antibiotics and his reply was \"don't need\".
I had to stress that this was a repeat of the previous sickness 2 weeks ago and then he reluctantly prescribed 3 days' worth of antibiotics.
That same night, I developed a fever... :skeptical:

So next day see the same doc again. Told him got sore throat so bad that it hurts when I swallow. Doc said \"oh, I'll give you some painkillers then.\" :scared:

My colleague's wife got it worse. She complained of phelgm to the doc & asked him for some medicine. To which the doc refused and then said she could just cough out the phelgm! :siao:

Really wonder what's wrong with the doctors nowadays??

But sometimes, after a few days the so called viral fever will draw out other symptoms, commonly throat inflammation, cough, common cold etc then a dose of anti biotic might be needed

I always think when phlegm turned green..it means getting bad/infection setting in..unlicensed doc 😂 that is when I will bring dd see doc and told doc abt it and more than 1 time doc says it is ok..so brought home almost same medicine.

this would probably be very heaty, but it doesn't require antibiotics.
I take it only when my throat is so painful when swallowing. that is the time my GP will knows I need amocla.

But I am innocent of that for that case. I actually have been to that clinic a few times over a span of 3 weeks for the same problem. It was my regular doctor who originally diagnosed me with acid reflux issues and tried to treat it. Eventually was referred to a specialist as the problem persisted. So if the locum doctor bothered to look at my records, he would have known. Should have used that to reply him hor. But at that time I was really caught offguard by his condescending demeanor. However once the doctor told me there was a viral flu going around and gave me a jab. Immediately got better after that. Problem is we are now "experts" and usually go in knowing what medication we want.

I am actually surprised that there are still people insisting on antibiotics for viral infections. I also see a lot of people expecting to recover from a cold in like 1 or 2 days.


In fact, I reject antibiotics even if the doctor were to prescribe them most of the time. Only times I do take them is when tests have been done and it shows bacterial infection. That is usually UTI or sinus infection. Even then, I will not take them immediately, but wait a few days to see if my own body can fight off the infection. Not that I self diagnose or don't believe doctors, more because I have rather bad reaction to most antibiotics.
I think the misunderstanding comes from the fact that it often seems to the patient that the antibiotic was the thing that \"cured\" the illness because:
1) the viral infection was already beginning to clear up after 2-3 days or so, which was when the patient started taking antibiotics. So the antibiotics were unnecessary; or
2) a bacterial infection started after a viral infection (which does happen), so when the doctor gave antibiotics at a 2nd visit, that did cure the 2nd infection. But the doctor would have been wrong to prescribe antibiotics at the 1st visit if he was quite sure that the infection was viral.

It just points to the need for more education to educate the public about the difference between viral and bacterial infections, and the purpose of antibiotics.

I used to be able to get very expensive (in SG) controlled medicine easily fr M’sia which costs only slightly less than 50% comparatively. Many years back, I Cold get Kenalog w/o prescription fr HK at HK$5 across counter the Chinese medicine shop.


Having convenience is one thing, but then it opens to avenue of self-medication & if coupled with ignorance how frequent or abuse, not fully u’stand’g the impact of overuse, then it becomes harmful.

There’s a price to pay for high regulation by MHA.

I see a doctor only when the medication I have at home are not effective…can’t be seeing a doctor for the slightest thing.
flatulence, diarrhoea, dry cough, cough with phlegm, blocked nose, sore throat, aches and pains, sinus…I have medication for these. polyclinic doctors are more cautious when issuing medicine. GPs are more cautious when it comes to antibiotics.

If it is viral infection, antibiotics will not help, even if it is taken.
It is our own immune system that is fighting against the virus and helping us to recover. 😄

If the fever was viral, antibiotics would not help. Too widespread use of antibiotics has created antibiotic resistance in the general population, so doctors are now advised to only prescribe antibiotics for bacterial infections. Fyi:

I felt unwell last Thursday. Throat so pain I could feel my swollen lymph nodes. Saw a doctor near my place. He did not prescribe antibiotics. My cough and cold worsened on Friday. Affected my sleep.

Saw another doctor who prescribed antibiotics. Felt much better. Can finally have a good sleep.

If I were working, would have been worse. Suffer from the cough, sore throat and drowsy from medicine. Need to recover fast. Really need the antibiotics.

for me, procodin issued by polyclinic doctors is very effective...it solves the problem of itchiness in the throat. side effect is :imconstipated:

But usually those drowsy cough mixture seem to control cough better.....
I not doctor hor. But I think part of the drowsiness may be due to the cold, and not just the medicine alone.

Sometimes prescribe some reddish cough medicine name like Activ-something.. (can't remember)
Dunno which one is better but the reddish one like prescribe when is light coughing.

Actifed expectorant will make you cough even more after taking it....suppose idea is to cough the phlegm. But it's very irritating.
I just went to see doc...for irritating phlegm which is so itchy it made me cough. He gave Procodin. It's for dry and irritating cough. Flumucil (own med) is to loosen phlegm.
