I just wanted to share with you my experience in buying an erhu for my child. I chanced upon this friendly guy selling brand new erhus on carousell for prices much cheaper than what my daughter's erhu teacher was quoting me! My daughter is sec 1 this year and just started learning the erhu, and I felt it was good if she had her own erhu, so she doesn't have to use the school's erhu which isn't very good. Her teacher told me that a good erhu would cost me more than $2k, while a performance-grade erhu would cost at least $3.5k. The $2k erhu is made from aged redwood while the $3.5k erhu is made from sandalwood by the pupil of a supposedly famous erhu master in China called ηŽ‹ζ Ήε…΄. I thought the price was a bit too high so I looked through carousell and found this guy:

He's very responsive and friendly, and is also very kind too as he said he gives discounts if the erhus he's selling are meant for students! To cut the long story short, I bought a sandalwood erhu from this seller in carousell for $2k, a much better price as compared to what my daughter's erhu teacher wanted to sell me at! He is also selling the aged redwood erhu too but I decided that the sandalwood would be a better investment for my child πŸ™‚

I'm not related to this seller, but I feel that he's really very friendly and has helped me to save quite a lot of money, therefore I'm helping him promote now! He even explained to me how to determine an erhu's quality when I met him to collect my erhu because I told him that I have totally no clue about erhu at all, I just didn't want to get cheated by my daughter's erhu teacher!! I hope he will still be selling in the future if my daughter wishes to buy another erhu πŸ™‚

BTW, I am not related to them in anyway. I bought a piece from them and I'm satisfied with their service.

Their service is very good and I often buy accessories from them, I find the instruments a little too \"mass-market\". I'm sure you can find something within your budget though. I'd advise not to get the S$200 erhu though bc of sound quality, bc Eason does have erhus below S$200 as well.

There's a new place called Eight Tones... at lavender as well but easier to get to. They sell from reoutable makers, even the budget ones which is good, got one for my son from there since he's now learning erhu there. http://www.eight-tones.com.sg

Oh didn't see this! Whoa looks like word has been getting around already... they just opened the new school at lavender, so quite up and coming! It really is a good school my son loves it there, very well equipped and offers all the courses a student needs from music theory to MEP tuition to aural skills. Lessons are reasonably priced as well, for the professional system they have it's very worth it.

Looks like can be done online these days...... Central conservatory exams administered by NAFA are held at year end.

my son was due to take the grade 8 erhu exams in Shanghai this year, and we've received word we're moving back to Singapore and so he won't sit the exam in shanghai, but hopefully he can take a graded exam in sinagpore.


1) is NAFA now the only test center for graded erhu examinations? (beijing exam)
2) i saw mention in an earlier post about Shanghai erhu exams being held in Singapore, but am unable to find info about that online. Please could someone point me in the right direction?

Of course if you don't want your son to be too stressed and not take grades its ok, but it could benefit him in joining Chinese Ochestra and DSA plus theres something to do and it's like a form of affirmation and reason for him to practise and be motivated. Eason is an established name in the Chinese orchestra field. Understand that they conduct lessons as well as supply musical instruments to schools. Was exploring pipa lessons with them for DD but opted for NUS finally due to timing conflicts.

Have heard of Ding Yi but not aware if they conduct lessons.
