<![CDATA[Home monitoring with CCTV or IP Cameras]]>Original Title: Anyone using IP Cameras?


Does anyone use IP cameras here? Got introduced by an excolleague to get one from this company called Dlink so that i can see my dearest baby Ethan even at work, or even through my mobile phone.

I'm thinking of getting one from the IT Show this weekend.
Is anyone using it? Any feedback or are there anything i should take note before i buy one?


Just got back to work but my whole mind is filled with Ethan now... OMG why do i have to come back to work..? I hope this feeling is not abnormal.. :oops:

Mine is Xiaomi cctv which is a small cam to be placed at designated location.
I have Xiaomi Mijia 360...I use it to spy on our cats 😂

Any advice on the pros and cons of wired or wireless CCTV for security deterrence? What is the difference between infrastructure set-up (power plug, data cabling) requirements between both?

Is wireless plug and play?
For wired CCTV, there's no need to worry about connectivity issues and is suitable for large scale coverage but this comes at the expense of wiring around the premises.

For wireless, it is dependent on wifi strength and coverage but has the advantage of being able to move around/reconfigure the location.

For wired, need have extra power plugs for cameras and recording box.

For wireless, some said need power source, others seems to be saying only need cable (am assuming is ethernet or cat 6 cable). Think is like this based on my very layman understanding.

CCTV - Closed-Circuit TV. Analog recording devices mainly for industrial use, or high security surveillance.

IP camera - Internet Protocol camera aka webcam aka netcam. Record on SD card, playback / monitoring via phone app.

You will need about 2 or 3 cameras to cover those areas and internet access w/ wireless router. On-going internet cost should be reasonable, normal home broadband will do.

Like that don’t need CCTV. A simple IP video camera (or two) with wireless internet is good enough.

Xiaomi home security camera 360 1080p is selling for about $55 each. Cheap and good, comes with all the bells and whistles (including IR) without the high cost.
