<![CDATA[Depressed over p3 results]]>I really don’t know what to do…my P3 gal’s results has been going southwards.

Its really depressing when I read how most kids are still getting band 1.

For SA1, she had band 3 for three subjects.

Has tuition for all subjects but it doesn’t seem to be improving. In fact its getting worse

Worse of all, she doesn’t even seem worried.

Short of intensifying her tuition, I don’t know what else to do.

Being a 1 to 1 private and experienced lady tutor, I am able to focus and work on individual student areas of weaknesses. This works best for academically weaker kids since it is not possible in a large class size.

High ability kids too benefit from my 1 to 1 tutoring. For HA kids, I teach them ahead of the school curriculum and expose them to higher order thinking questions to further enhance their thinking skills.

I believe every child has different learning ability. Amongst my students, I have one who was diagnosed ADHD. This student has very short attention span, problem with focusing and keeps forgetting things which have been taught. Currently in P4, he came to me last year. He used to fail his maths but last SA2 exam, under my dedicate teachings, he managed to do decently well in Maths and scored well for Science. ( I welcome parents to vertify my students' results slips when their kids attend my lessons).

Not necessarily. We hv a new teacher transferred to ds sch this yr and she was assigned to be the form teacher of the top class. She didn't teach much but expected the kids to perform well. My friend's dd has no tuition. So my friend asked her dd to ask ft. Ft told the girl to ask tutor. When the girl said I do not have any tuition, ft said then ask your parents. This girl used to top the cohort for the last 2 years but this year, her marks had dropped to band 2 for all 3 main subjects. FT teaches all 3 main subjects. HCL still maintained in top 5, bec not taught by FT.

The thing I am angry is why would the school assigned a teacher who has just joined the sch to teach the best class. luckily my ds has tuition, if rely only on ft, sure die. Nx yr, same FT again. Sigh..

Yea, i think should bring it up to the principal. Why not get the tutor to take over the place of a teacher ? hahas ! i'm just kidding. Teachers should go for re-training.

I am an experienced English tutor. I teach at my residence in the Eunos vicinity. I have experience helping very weak students who failed to pass the subject. There is a big jump in standard from p2 to p3 and from p4 to p5 so it is important to build up a good foundation in lower primary before a child moves on to upper primary.

You could make a special request to the school to let you view the papers. You may need to promise them not to ask them to change any marks - that's the part that most schools are concerned about as it makes more admin work for them. Or you could ask your daughter's teachers for specific feedback on her exams.

Did you look through her paper and analyze what is reason for her to fail the paper. For Eng and Chinese it might be due to comprehension and close passage.

but i had a shock when i received his results mid year for P3 this year! he was LAST in class... (50+ marks for math and science, english 70+ and failed in chinese) i almost cried when i received the report book from the teacher...

for the final term, no computer games at all, minimal ipad and iphone for the last 2 months... thank goodness and thank you to great tutors... he did well this round. math and english improved to 80+, science and chinese to 70+... phew... at least this school holiday can enjoy!

well,i feel a bit disappointed but not give up.

did 2 mistakes in MCQ. he lost most marks in Open ended questions. From the answers he gave,i notice he showed understanding in concepts but didn't answer according to what it asked.

for eg, A diagram shows bag A,B & C carry number of of stones before the bag broke.

Based on diagram,explain your answer.

Ans:Bag A can hold 30 stones before this bag breaks.

Correct Ans: Bag A can hold the most number of stones before it breaks.

One gr of parents intended to go straight to the principal but aft that, they dropped the idea bec their children didnt do well in the past few exams which means their children might drop to the 2nd class nx yr. So no point complaining if you can’t be sure that yr child will remain in this class. Some do not want FT to pick on their kids. So in the end, no one dare to complain.

How do you know next year is same FT. For my child class, the teacher think that the student do not need tuition if they follow what the teacher taught in class.
In ds school, usually the same FT is in charge for the same class for 2 years unless FT goes for training or on maternity leave.

Your child is lucky to hv such teacher. Whereas my ds FT thinks she doesn't need to teach much bec most kids in the top class would hv tuition or kiasu. So even if she doesn't teach, the kids won't hv any prob.

Her dd said my ds has been scolded or punished a few times. She was right. I talked to FT about que in CA being marked wrongly due to comp glitch and also asked a few questions. We noticed once parents talk to FT, she will pick on the kid after that.


Bec of this reason, parents chose not to complain. Moreover, we still have to face this FT for another yr.

DD, P3 too, also has teachers who either don't teach much or teach wrong thing this year. Calculate marks wrongly also just brushed my girl off when she approached teacher about it. Twice my girl brought up to teacher and twice the teacher insisted correct without checking. I had to step in. Sometimes it's not parents want to but situation requires parents' intervention.

sad to say, many schools have this tendancy to put good teachers to the \"better students\". whether banding takes place, often the weaker students may not get the proper guidance. Guess kids nowadays have to depends on their luck to get good teachers else they have to build up their own confidence to do well. 😓

Previously, I understand that from P2 to P3, children result might drop so it is a norm. From P4 to P5, there is another round of drop in results. I do heard from friends that some kids who did well from P1 to P4 might fail the paper. It is because school is setting paper according to PSLE standard. So it will need time to adjust.
School exams are often set way above PSLE standard. PSLE actually not that difficult, especially this year.
