We’re planning to go to 4-5 cities and we’re planning to stay in hostels. We want to spend our days going to free museums and exploring the cities and we’ll spend the nights drinking.

For those who are interested, We are planning to start from the Munich and end up in Hamburg visiting cities like Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Cologne along the way.

So here are the questions;

Is it more wise to pay some more money to find a hostel with a kitchen so we can cook our own meals instead of just making sandwiches and eating them?

Should we buy weekly city tickets instead of walking short to medium distances and buying a one-way bus ticket for longer distances?

Do you have any advices for drinking other than buying it from the supermarkets and going to bars already half-drunk?

What is the cheapest way of traveling between cities? Should we use Interrail or should we just buy regular train tickets?

And perhaps the most important question, How much would the eating, public transportation and drinking would cost daily (or weakly) from what I’ve told you so far?

From how long advance should we start the planning? (Buying the plane tickets, the hostel rooms etc)

These are the questions I can think of at the moment. I’m open for any other advices you can give, any suggestions you can give me about the cities and/or stories you can tell me.

Thanks in advance

Jackcoline

Reply to Travel - Germany on Mon, 05 Nov 2018 01:56:42 GMT

I am well travelled in Germany and have visited the ‘big four’ (Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne) as well as many other smaller towns and have to say. These routes have been promoted to travel agencies and tourists by the German tourism board for several decades; I didn't invent them

https://s15.postimg.cc/sbxl2onl7/Germanymap2.png\">

It took me a few trips to cover most of Germany also. Looooong time ago, I went to West Germany, Rhine region, Heidelberg, Blackforest, West Berlin...Those were the popular routes before 1989 reunification, so yes, I stood on the western part of Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie and paid in deutsche marks.

Then I covered the central region with friends from uni. Later on, I slowly did the other cities after extension of my work trips. It depends on your onward journey. You cover the region enroute to the neighbouring destination...

From Dusseldorf, you can also do Cologne, Aachen, Essen and former capital city, Bonn. I also covered these places looooong time ago. Bonn was where the embassies were & where Beethoven's house is.

You can take a train or drive across the border to the Netherlands easily. Not sure where you'll be going ultimately; Eindhoven (Philips HQ), Maastricht and Nijmegen are near the border. However, let me preempt you first, they are very boring during non-Christmas lull periods. Otherwise, train trip to Amsterdam won't take too long.

Zeit

Reply to Travel - Germany on Fri, 03 Aug 2018 17:50:25 GMT

MyPillow:
Am being kiasu now - pondering for next dec trip

Can advise is English widely spoken in Germany big cities - munich, frankfurt?
I took Luth air and transit in frankfurt in June, all speak good English in airport .
Worry about language barrier ? will it be easy for me to do Munich and Austria -taking train fr munich to innsbruk, salzburg, English speaking staff in major train stations and sign boards for trains? we dunno german/french etc
Many Thanks ,yah

Yes
(Can advise is English widely spoken in Germany big cities - munich, frankfurt?)

speedmaths.012624com

Reply to Travel - Germany on Fri, 03 Aug 2018 01:57:35 GMT

Am being kiasu now - pondering for next dec trip

Can advise is English widely spoken in Germany big cities - munich, frankfurt?
I took Luth air and transit in frankfurt in June, all speak good English in airport .
Worry about language barrier ? will it be easy for me to do Munich and Austria -taking train fr munich to innsbruk, salzburg, English speaking staff in major train stations and sign boards for trains? we dunno german/french etc
Many Thanks ,yah

MyPillow

Reply to Travel - Germany on Thu, 02 Aug 2018 15:56:18 GMT

Hiaweh:
Wow!
