Maybe sound the teacher out first. My child’s P1 teacher does not really like it and ask her try not to do it whereas the P2 teacher is ok with it. Lucky that there is always a trial run a few days before the actual graded day so that teacher’s comments can be taken into account and improve further.

And oh, depending on the topic, it would be good to have a conclusion too for certain topics, like my favorite animal ( why this animal is your favorite animal).

When we received the memo from school, I was quite clueless. All we had was the topic and date.

He received a 满分 and so, I believed we must have done something right. By sharing what we have done, I hope our experience can help parents with p1 kids.

1. Know the topic and discuss with your kid
For example, the topic is \"我最喜欢的动物＂. Discuss with your kid and decide on the subject. As much as I believe the presenter needs to \"feel\" for the subject (ie must be an animal he/she likes), I think to a certain extent the subject chosen should be easy to talk about (by presenter) and understand (by the audience).

2. Script it!
Using the 5w1h questions to scope the content. Jot the hypy in pencil above the characters if need be. Words chosen should be according to your child's proficiency/ability. Choose words which are easier for the kid to pronounce.

A script spanning 7-8 pages is unnecessary (don't laugh, my son's classmate had a 8 pages' script!) My kid's script was about 80 words. I personally believe that the content and the language used shd be at the child's level, instead of being crafted by parent. Anyway, 老师一看就知道是谁写的。

3. Check out the 评分准则.
If you can't get from teacher, like me, then here are some samples you can consider

https://cl2015p1b.files.wordpress.com/2%20...%20ubrics.pdf

http://lms.asknlearn.com/PUNGGOLGREEN_P%20...%20hx?path=50

This part is important as it serves as a check list on the good practices (eg intro and concluding statement) and the areas where marks are allocated.

4. rehearsals
The kids may/may not be required to memorize the script. They may not even need to speak according to the script. Do confirm with the teacher.

My son's teacher did not insist on memorizing/speaking word for word according to script. However, my kid still spent some time to familiarize himself with the content because I felt that it should be 展示与讲述（show and tell), not 展示与朗读(show and read).

When the child recites the content, do remember to point out the main points and the important bits (eg greet the audience). The child needs to understand that remembering the sequence of the main points is more important than memorizing it word for word. In case the child's mind goes blank, the main points hopefully can help to save the day. Some teachers/schools may penalize long pauses.

As the child gets more confident, introduce some 笑点and/or actions to make the presentation more interesting. 笑点should be easily understood (by audience). Do remind the child that he/she cannot laugh at his/her own jokes.

Watch/perfect the 发音/咬字。

Best to let the child get use to \"speaking loudly\". Audibility is very important. Some teachers would just sit next to the presenter while some would sit at the back of the classroom.

Remind the child to square the shoulders, /stand straight and maintain eye contact (get some soft toys to be the audience). Oh yes, smile. Actions should be 落落大方.

5. 道具
Get a suitable one, representative of the subject/topic and big enough. Please don't get something that can fit into the pocket... too small. Ensure the prop is appropriately shown. 展示与讲述mah, （观众）看不到，叫什么＂展示＂？

6. 大战前夕
Remind the kid - nobody knows the content better than him (it's true what). If he 忘词，no need to panic. Just say whatever that comes into mind (but must be relevant to the topic la). Keep calm and smile.

Oh last thing - sleep early.

If you are clueless like me, I hope the above has been helpful.

Imami

Reply to P1 Chinese - Show & Tell on Mon, 25 Aug 2014 09:10:11 GMT

bagabunny:

sembgal:
I bought it from etutoronline and not from ezhishi.

http://www.etutoronline.net/eshop/

For my DD's primary school, her school subscribes to http://www.lead.com.sg (known as mconline) and there is Oral Package in there for us to explore. I bought it for $29.90 online previously. There is a promotion now and the CD-Rom is selling for $20. You can order online from http://www.ezhishi.net/Oral/

Tien Hsia does not offer Oral and Writing enrichment to P1. Even though once in a while the teacher goes through a little Oral, I find that it is insufficient to prepare my dd for her Chinese Oral Assessment. Not only have I bought the Oral CD-Rom, I have bought other Oral books for home practice too. Next year when my dd is in P2, I will definitely enrol her in Tien Hsia Writing and Oral enrichment on top of regular Tien Hsia Higher Chinese enrichment. Her weakness is in sentence construction. She speaks mostly in English and it affects the way she constructs her Chinese sentences.

sembgal

Reply to P1 Chinese - Show & Tell on Mon, 25 Aug 2014 06:54:21 GMT

sembgal:
I bought it from etutoronline and not from ezhishi.

http://www.etutoronline.net/eshop/

For my DD's primary school, her school subscribes to http://www.lead.com.sg (known as mconline) and there is Oral Package in there for us to explore. From K2 onwards, I make him roll up his sleeves to write the whole script.

If he doesn't know how to write some diff words, he must type the corresponding HYPY on google and get the Chinese char himself. It's easier to memorise the script if you get kid to write himself.

I also videotape my son delivering his Chinese S&T several times until I get the perfect cut. I play back and let him watch the NG cuts until he learns from his mistakes.

That's what I do to myself at home, before I do any Chi presentations or emcee job to a PRC audience. I don't know how much DD2 can memorise or remember but what I do know is we will have a very busy, stressful weekend!

Hi Champion,

I have been through such preparations with my P1 ds2 this year for both English and Chinese show and tell and oral. I can fully understand how you feel. I don't remember having to go through this with my dd1 5 years ago.

From my experience with ds2, there is no need to make the child memorise. So long the child knows the content and knows how to say the content using her own words, that is fine. It does not matter if there are a few mistakes here and there.

In fact for my ds2's latest English Oral, I have no time to prepare him at all cos my dd1 is taking PSLE this year. Last week, he came home from school and announced that he had his English Oral. I felt so relieve inside me cos I no longer need to prepare him for that. But he has a Chinese Oral coming up.

alng
