So Jenga and Legos were only given to them when they were at least 3.5years old so that they don’t chew on them and get choke on it. At that time, I was very into articles that kept psychoing me that children play time can be educational too. So the toys that I bought for them have to work some part of their brain e.g. creativity.

DD can come up to me after piecing her lego bits and tell me that’s the toilet bowl, that’s the kitchen top, study table and so on when its just a brick haha. So in a way, I guess she is working on her memory to understand what those different bricks represents. Strictly no ipad and computer games. I forbid my kids to have facebook accounts for games and my house up till today has no ipad or iphone. Only hubby has a smart phone for work.

Next will check what the toy got to with educating my kid - motor skills, taking turns, role play, learning purposes? If not much achieve, I will not buy. I do not buy toy guns, toy swords, arrows for my kid.

Other factors will be the interest of the kids, the price, the quality and etc.

E.g. when my girl was few months old, I bought jumperoo and exersaucer for her, these 2 toys can stimulate her brain when she play it and free me some time to do houseworks, the toys were passed down to my son and when my son learned walking I sold them away for quite a good price. So there is a resale value for the toys, and the toys is of good quality to my kids.
Subsequently I would normally buy educational toys for them after they passed 2, the toys are fun to them and they are also learning when playing it, so very beneficial to them and worth the money spent. When they out-grown the toys I would normally passed down to others or sell it away.
So in conclusion, when I pay for something I want to ensure I’m paying for something value for money, beneficial to them, and of course must be what they like to play too.

We buy lots of lego, rubiks cube, boardgames, drawing boards, kitchen playsets, ride-ons, RC cars, dolls, figurines, jigsaw puzzles, craft materials etc. Educational PC games are fine but we limit the time spent on such games. We do not believe in throwing an iPad or PSP to our kids.
