Just like politicians, they should not expect showers of material gifts as they are in the public service. It’s an honorable service, nonetheless, and doesn’t need to be compensated lavishly.

In my days, I simple gave flowers and candy. What has the school system turned into nowadays? Whose idea is it to disallow the students to give directly? What’s the danger behind that? Is there a 3rd party(event management) involved that is cashing in?

Is it just me that is appalled by this idea? Cruises, electronic toys, vouchers, etc? Is Singapore really trying to live up to being the richest city in the world?

In a follow-up email from the same parent received just 5 minutes ago, TRE learnt that many parents had complained and that the memo was withdrawn.

However, it is not known at this moment in time if the “gift receiving” was also withdrawn or merely the memo was.

.

Editor’s note: As far as TRE knows, students are not allowed to give presents to a certain specific teacher. By organizing a dinner and dance event and giving the presents away as gifts (say in a lucky draw), then it is not ‘wrong’.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 dont know if this is true.

i think cough drops, card or pens good enough already lah.

Reply to chs openly solicits teachers' day presents from parents on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 04:26:16 GMT

3Boys:

concern2:
[quote=\"Lilac66\"]
PS: To explain the origin of Singapore Fools..A friend's young child was learning to read signs when he came across the word Pools. There likely is not any misdemeanour intended, perhaps a little bit of over-enthusiasm at worst. Although I would not say that this was 'elitist', it still has the potential to create discomfort in the minds of the less well-off parents and families.

My DS came back and asked me if we were putting anything up, and when I said no, he asked why not and proceeded to list out the stuff some of the other parents WERE putting up. The kids talk, this kind of thing preys on the mind and potentially creates a divide between the 'givers' and 'non-givers'.

We should not be blind to this and just say 'You want to give, give, you don't want to give, don't give.'

In this first place, should teachers even be receiving gifts or gratuities outside of the workplace? How does this square with civil service policies?

:goodpost: Well said! Teachers expectation is really showing of APPRECIATION of their efforts and passion from the heart, not the gifts. Another realistic way of showing appreciation is don't give the teachers any problems, especially when they try very hard.
