<![CDATA[SECONDARY SCHOOL AROUND ANG MO KIO]]>Hi


My son did not do well in the Prelim, I expect him to score from 190 to 200 at the most. Need some feedback on some of the 2nd tier Sch Sch in AMK. I hope those who have seen or heard anything about any school can share with me. I intend to put him in Express even though he could not go to those better school in AMK.

Hence, if your choice is NA, go to a top school for NA and forego Express…the environment is LOADS better.

But if you’re choosing Express…avoid choosing a school where he/she JUST meets the COP…cos it means you go to the bottom class…and the less than positive socialisation usually pulls the kid down…

being from the education service, here’s my 2 cents worth. Honestly, in AMK, or most areas, schools with express cohort who take students less than 200 are mostly the same. The COP doesn’t mean much really…most parents decide on schools looking at the COP (higher means good!), which is a misconception.

Value added is actually a very good indicator…but bad news for everyone now that it’s removed.

My take from previous experience and observation, kids do better when they are in a good class, even if this means they go to a school perceived as lower ranked.

Socialisation plays a big role in a kid’s perceived level of ability. Just observe…the top few classes in perceived less popular schools like Bishan Park, Chong Boon etc, are actually performing better than their counterparts in better schs, but in the bottom few classes. Guess parents don’t always get to see it from this side…Just food for thought ya?

It is better to go to NA in a good school then to go to express stream in a not so good school. Your child might end up mixing with the wrong friends & not doing well in his studies. Environment of the school is very important, especially to the teens. Kids at this age tend to influence by the peers easily, a more competitive environment will help the child to work harder & perform better.

Personally knew a kid with 199 and went to NA as parent has same thinking as in go good sch and then work hard to go express. Backfired quite badly. Child deliberately got into trouble cos angry with parent for making that choice.

Clearly indicate which schs you should aim for.

I’ve heard differing thoughts. A friend’s dd stayed in bukit panjang area and was a botherline case. She went to some church sec school in that area under express. My friend said that school is good and helped her dd. She said her brother who is a tutor advised them not to let her dd waste another year in secondary school so they insisted express.

However my nephew who was also a botherline case and chose express stream in some ulu neighbourhood school in cck area. Heard they were not teaching some subject as not enough teacher. Didn’t see my nephew improving as well… still addicted to computer. We always see him online after school and displaying colorful languages on FB.

On the other hand, I do have my ex-hairdresser who sent his botherline st nic dd to st margaret under NA. He said the dd did well in NA and start to find herself. I also have another friend who in the end decided to send her ds to NA in Bukit Panjang High. Sec 1 this year.

Maybe someone who has experience can share the thought process with parents who face such situation here.

Zhong Hua would be a little further. Other possible choices will be Xinmin Sec school at Fernvale (can go by bus 86 from AMK, maybe 15mins journey) or Anderson at AMK. Xinmin is a Band 1 or 2 sch whilst Anderson is a Band 1 sch and they have NA stream too.


Maybe the good way to make decision is to check the banding of the NA stream for these sec sch. Not sure if there is banding in this year’s sec school posting booklet, but the banding was indicated in last year’s sec school posting booklet. Then you should visit the schools, understand their culture and CCA, then decide from there.

Ang Mo Kio Is band 5, Presbyterian High is band 5, Mayflower is band 7 & Zhong Hua is band 2. You should consider normal stream if your son gets below 200.

At least you can look forward to promotion to express if he does well in addition to better enviroment vis-a vis lesser knwn schs. The discipline at Zhong Hua is relatively strict while at Presbytarian High, good values will be imparted to him. The latter will pray for your kid whether he is a believer or not. Miracles may just happen, we don't know.

Let me share with you two success stories:

1. A guy who is now in 2nd yr of ns scored 194 psle yr 2004 and studied at Serangoon jc, a lower tier jc. He did well to secure a place in NUS faculty of engineering and will matriculate next year.

2. This one is a much more stunning case. This guy who is now serving ns studied at Millenia Institute, a 3-yr A-levels course. He topped his school last year and qualified for a place in a local law school. In the process of selection, he miraculously fenced off competitions from many good students hailed from top jcs. He will matriculate in yr 2014.

You need to enforce strict discipline without been seen as nagging. Praise him when opportunities arise and hopefully, he will take off.

I look forward to hearing a success story from you in the near future.

I don’t hve much to share about these two schools. One thing you can do now is to chk their schools’ ranking and cop. The lower the cut off and higher the ranking is the higher valued added one.

At the end of the day, choose one he’s more comfortable with as he’s going to spend the next few yrs there.
