They also factored in details of family income.

The findings suggested children from the poorest families were more likely than their better-off peers to want to work in the public sector perhaps as doctors, teachers or police officers.

The study also revealed most of the seven-year-olds interviewed were very ambitious. Just over 80% were hoping for professional or managerial jobs, with girls more likely to dream of professional careers.

The researchers found girls were more interested in careers involving helping or caring for people or animals while boys were more likely to be motivated by dreams of becoming powerful, popular or wealthy.

The study found 12% of boys wanted to be policemen and 5% firemen. It also revealed 23% of girls wanted to be teachers, 12% vets and 6% doctors.

The study was based on data from the Millennium Cohort Study, which has been following more than 19,000 children from all over the the UK since they were born in 2000-1. The aim is to continue to follow them into adulthood. The study is run by the Centre for Longitudinal Studies at the Institute of Education.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-19586824
http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/62884000/jpg/_62884223_primarypupils.jpg\">

This is so fun! MOE's Education and Career Guidance (ECG) programme runs from Primary 3 up to pre-university level, and for primary school pupils, the focus is on career awareness.

Mr Jeffrey Chan Wai Meng is a senior specialist in MOE's Guidance Branch. He conceptualises, plans and implements the ECG programme. Describing the primary school ECG programme, which is carried out during a specially designated Form Teacher Guidance Period, he says, \"It serves to help the child discover themselves, their interests and abilities, and point to suitable educational pathways that develop them for work and life.\"

Mr Chan adds, \"It's never too early to start. In fact, research has shown that the upper primary period is an opportune time to provide career education, as pupils are developmentally ready to benefit from broadening their horizon about career options.\" Here is his five-step guided approach for parents who want to nurture their child's aspirations:

1. Ask: What do you want to achieve? - Have your child write down what he or she wants to achieve.
2. Ask: How will you get there? - Have him or her come up with a plan on how he or she intends to attain those goals.
3. Establish accountability - Have your child put up the action plan somewhere prominent. Constant sight of it will help him or her stay motivated and on-track.
4. Review your child's achievements - Ask: Are the goals, big or small, being met?
5. Review these goals, plans and outcomes - Throughout the year, review the plan and progress with your child. Do adjustments need to be made? How does your child feel about his or her progress?

Full story: http://www.schoolbag.sg/archives/2012/08/finding_the_right_fit_in_a_sec.php
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7280/7723545800_5833ab16dd_m.jpg\">

AceTutors123

Reply to "I want to be a _____ when I grow up" on Wed, 19 Sep 2012 02:51:59 GMT

anyone knows what u are today when u were below 10?

anyone knows what u will be like when retire in say 20-30 years from now?
