<![CDATA[MOE Test for P1]]>Hi,


My dd is in P1. She told me that she sat for a test from MOE yesterday. According to her, they were given 1/2 hour to complete the test and some of the questions are very difficult. One of the questions require her to identify the piece of the missing puzzle. When she told me that I immediately associate it with the game on FB - Who has the biggest brain?

Does anyone know what this test is all about? Is MOE trying to identfy which kid has the biggest brain? :?

They are trying to gauge the overall standard of the pupils. From my understanding, different levels are tested randomly in different years. One of my students told me that it was a surprise test so that the pupils would not be able to prepare for it. In fact, my student told me that most of her friends decided to purposely do badly in the test cos they thought that if they did well, MOE would raise the standard. My student thought that she and her friends were doing their juniors a favour. 😉

My girl will be in P1 next year and we are already informed on this.

The principal told us that the test is for Eng and Math. Those students who do not meet the appropriate level for their age, will be selected for support group. :roll:

Not all schools and students are picked for this test. I believe it is for MOE to monitor the academic level of Pr1 students so as to aid their planning. The result will not affect the child taking the test in anyway.

My DD and DS also went through this test (P1). DS was able to complete it and DD said she could not do the E section.


Glad to hear that this is some research that MOE was doing. Initially I was worried that they had started the streaming and labeling process right in P1 itself!

They were given half an hour to complete a green booklet that contains 5sections, each section have 12questions, so total 60questions. All MCQ bt have an answer sheet separately for them to shade the correct answer.is The kind of questions are v similar to whats being mentioned in this post. My DS couldnt complete complete all, think he said left about 7questions, and the last section questions are super difficult.

Results will not be released to parents, not even to form teachers. MOE will only release the names of students who needs the extra coaching.

That means all pri 1 kid should have been tested, guess different schools may have different timings.

he mentioned that only 1 boy in the whole class could finish the paper. Not sure if he gave the right info, he said there are 60 questions in 60 pages (1 question each page) and he could not finish the last 13 questions.

My boy did not finish Sect E paper(left 1 or 2 questions unanswered)... Kept telling me question E11 is diffcult. Only a few of his classmates could finish all the questions. He told me its 1hr, guess from the other parents, think they were given only half-an-hr, so it was really tough to complete 60 MCQs(12Q each set; 5 Sets altogether) within that duration.

Since I've never heard of this test and boy is very sure teacher told him it's MOE test, so that got me worried...

Seemed like it's for some kind of research from other forumers. Guess nothing to worry about.

The format and questions(mostly pictures/patterns) are the same as those described by parents here.


I asked my friends/colleagues who have kid in pri 1 and none of them know whether their kids went for the test...puzzled!!!

Luckily found this old thread, so at least i know I am not alone.

I was told he was the only one from his class & the qs were difficult, most of them were not even taught before for P1, such as fractions. He was asked to do the test a 2nd time, i think probably to complete the qs that he did not do & this time the \"teacher\" explained the qs.


He was quite upset about it cos he had the impression that it was an extra test/lesson as he was the only went. On top of this, he missed his chinese lesson twice & had to bring back hw. 😢

I asked his FT & was told that MOE was conducting some research on the standard of students based on ramdoning selected students from each class. I found out that some classes have more students asked to do the test.

I think there is nothing much to worry about.

Yes. my boy said it's mostly picture patterns.

It reminds me of the aptitude test I had to take years ago for psychology at NUS. Needless to say, I couldn't pass since I didn't even have a chance to finish the paper.

Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) will be testing on academic work like science, math, literacy etc.

Did you managed to get a peek of the questions posed? 😉

DS re-calls back the questions and walk through with me how he derives his answers. It's not exactly a math question that has been touch on. More like iq test. Majority of the question only shows pictures like a few diagrams and he is to answer what is the next pattern.

He said v. simple test on patterns. I asked his teacher today and she said MOE is conducting some research (dunno on what) and the school will not be informed of the test results. She said the results will not affect the kids in anyway so the sch did not inform the parents beforehand.

I heard ds was telling me last week that he was asked to sit for a math test too. In his class, not all was asked to sit for the test.

He can’t exactly remember how many questions exactly but he told me around 10 - 11 (non-MCQ).

I was thinking it was a UNSW paper but upon checking the UNSW site, it will only be held tomorrow.

So, quite puzzled what paper was for.
