Depends on what science stuff uā€™re looking for. If for kiddos, Sc Centre have a shop at itā€™s exit. Ano place more for adults Iā€™m aware wld be at Novena at a quiet corner. This shop mostly medical books & apparatus or medical studentā€™s skeletals.

When kid was younger, we took all sort of stuff around the house to examine, e.g. fabric, hair. Now older, link to science. Sometimes related to topics taught in school, maybe more in depth, e.g. germination of pollen grain.

Since there are things I know we canā€™t prepare at home, we also bought sets of prepared slides. Kid loves to see these, e.g different types of cells, proboscis of bee, leg of insect etc..

The one we have allow us to see chloroplasts. Didnā€™t try mitochondrion.

The shop sells a whole range of microscopes, even very advanced ones. But may cost a lot. They demo a few for us so we could decide which is better for us. Still waiting for kid to be older and to major in science before I can justify in buying advanced ones. šŸ˜“

Donā€™t know if they sell stain. Have to check with them or get it elsewhere.

In primary schools, the kids donā€™t get to use microscopes much. More often than not, itā€™s group work.
We bought one for our kid so we can explore more about science. Most of the time, we go beyond what is needed at primary level. We like to see it for ourselves instead of just relying on books whenever possible.

I see! Just wondering, what do your kids like to look at under the microscope? Now that I recall, my parents did buy one beginner microscope for me (probably from Science Centre)...it came with a few prepared slides (maybe leaf cells? Or insect wings? Canā€™t remember)...and also a few blank slides where I could put eg water containing pond algae, or a cut strand of hair to view.

These are maybe interesting to fuel a childā€™s initial interest in Science, but for more advanced levels, does the magnification power really go up to the detailed cell level required like in O and A level biology? Do they sell microscopes that show mitochondria and chloroplasts? Do they sell the required chemicals to prep, stain and fix the slides? I still remember my histology textbook...didnā€™t find anything so interesting about the stained cells that I had to prep and see them at home haha.

Just genuinely puzzled. Donā€™t the kids get to use microscopes in school during their Science lab sessions? Or are you seriously intending to use them for homeschooling purposes?


I know I spent decades using them during my science lab lessonsā€¦all the way into my first few lab-based jobs. A good microscope with a good lens is extremely costly. The ā€œaffordableā€ ones are justā€¦toysā€¦imo.

It is located at the linkway of Singapore Science Centre. Not the shop that sells toys and other stuff near the entrance but further down the linkway.


They have a good selection of different types of microscopes. May be able to get one with the right price range for you. Their prepared slides are good too.

Stimulating interest in science is one of the most important things to do with kids. I think sometimes there is a tendency to believe that progress in academics is defined as the ability to score on progressively harder and harder tests. However progress in the real world of science is almost always sparked first by interest and curiosity.

Actually I just bought microscopes today for our tuition center biology classes. I went to the Singapore Science Center shop where they sell telescopes and Microscopes. I got the Celestron Model Micro 360 for a little under $300. I was just looking at a bunch of slides with it and it is a good basic Microscope. It is battery powered which I like and has a light both below and above the sample. This makes it easily portable and you don't have to plug it in. I use rechargeable batteries in case someone forgets to turn the light off.

It has two eyepieces and 3 objective lenses, so magnification is 40x/64x/100x/160x/400x/640x.

They have other more expensive models too if you want something fancier.

I've got a good compilation of biology as well as interesting physics things to look at. There really are a lot of neat things to see under a microscope if you know what to look at.
