No specific “branded” program, just an enrichment teacher, group of about 5-10 kids, 1.5hr a week.
He can currently do addition / subtraction up to >10000.
But haven’t learned multiply / divide.
Nor have his class progressed beyond using the abacus to mental math / visualising the abacus / using fingers etc. Which I’m rather disappointed by.

In the new school year, I’m currently wondering if I should switch him to one of the “branded schools” (probably CMA?) or just continue privately 1x1 lessons with the same teacher.

Private is more convenient (no need to arrange transport), but I’m not sure his progress can be considered good so far. Any thoughts on this? Like is this considered good already, am I expecting too much?
Sorry, don’t mean to sound like a tiger mom, but wanna make sure that we don’t just waste time, money and opportunities. He’s generally a bright kid, so I don’t think it’s the comprehension that’s the issue.

Thanks!

A thought on it. It’s very technical and dry and nowhere you can be "creative". May not be suitable for young kids if it doesn’t interest them. It’s just a drill to do the homework n sit through the class. Lots of "theory and formula to remember…can be fun to some if they like to tackle and play with tools. In my opinion, k1 is the youngest to start.

It will only benefit as much as your child is drawn and show interest and has good attention/focus, if not, they would not yield the benefits. Just imagine getting a secondary school kid to learn masters mathematics formulas…it just strains them too much. Basically, that’s the whole idea of learning maths in preschool in a fun and creative way, that would get their foundation going already, why abacus? they learn about numeracy in a realistic environment with concrete materials through play etc…

It’s very easy to learn.

I’ve ordered a $3 soroban from eBay and whilst I’m waiting for it to arrive in the post I’m teaching my 5 year old to count on his fingers like a soroban (thumb represents 5). He loves “helping me” solve my counting problems by advising me what to do when I run out of fingers (“use the other hand!”). He’s starting to use his fingers the soroban way, but young children are still learning finger coordination so it’s a lot harder for them than it is for adults who take it for granted.

I initially planned on enrolling him in a soroban course but I figured I don’t need to pay someone so much money to teach basics like 2+2 and 7+8. Once the child knows the basics it should be easy to apply the same logic for larger numbers. It takes years of repetition for it to become second nature, so it’ll cost thousands of dollars in course fees to actually get good at it. I’ve asked mathematicians at university what they think of it and they all say they think that’s a waste of money. ‘Real maths’ is about problem solving according to them, not doing basic arithmetic fast.

Abacus is being promoted as a kind of brain enrichment program, but a child’s brain will be enriched by just about any non-passive activity.

So why are parents spending so much money and time on abacus courses? Some children mentioned on this forum are doing these classes when my child’s fast asleep, and one reason I do this is because scientists say that lots of sleep is important for a child’s mind and body.
