      Wow. Maths question is getting more and more difficult now compare to two years ago. I remember at dd time, P1 (2006) to P3 (2008) were quite smooth except start from P4 then we need to monitor.

          Actually this question is not difficult if they have learnt how to draw model diagram. P2 has learnt model diagram.

            My son solved this question by applying the multiplication concept ie.

            23 x 7 = 23 + 23 + 23 + 23 + 23 +23 +23
            = 161
            Ans: $161 - $14 = $147

              i must be commenting from my own pov then...cos i am still very much stuck at the old-school math....that explains why i take a longer time to solve some of ds1's math questions.... sometimes, i don't even dare teach him in case i confuse him...:oops:

                    I bought the book \"Step by Step Maths Problem Solving using Models\" for Primary 2 by Simon Eio and managed to \"educate\" myself somewhat on models! :lol:

                      Hi Orange Belt,


                      If you were to relate the model method to algebra, I think there is some relationship to algebra.It’s just that in the model method, we represent the unknown " x" with a box or diagram and in algebra, it is simply x and y or any other alphabet.

                      Hope this helps.

                        My DD and I find Fan-Math i-Excel (Heuristic and Model Approach) useful. It's a series of books for P1-P6. It covers some common heuristic (non-routine) questions and models. The P1 book even provides stickers for beginners to better visualise the models.

                        Fan-Math also has a set of assessment book cum CD-Rom (Model as a tool) for P2 aqnd P3. It's an interactive lesson that kids and adults would enjoy. Maybe you can go to their website and try their demo. Cost is $88 (promo price) for 12 month subsription. Works out to be about $7.33 per month... :lol: However, it's coming to year end so I don't know if they can pro-rate.
