<![CDATA[Horror Stories - Tutors]]>I have unpleasant experience with the tutor to teach my son. Tuition agency are mostly money minded. Not only that, those personal tutor advertise by themselves through internet also cannot be trusted.


I have experience with a lady tutor. I found her through her internet advertisement. After a few lessons she started using different excuses to postpone the lessons, especially school holidays. So it became my son need attend the two or three lessons in one week. In my opinion, children need a consistant practice in order to get good result. Not to rush him and ask him remember the knowledge in one week. The tutor also has an excuse to say that no need give him tuition homework cos my son need to handle school homework. I feel this lady tutor is irresponsible. I decided terminate her. I given her one and a half month notice. But she dragged the lessons again. I called her once a week when she can come. She kept on saying that she is not "fully recovered" from sick. One and a half month gone, she still cannot finish the last lesson. Do parents believe that this lady sick for such a long time? You get well three weeks even got chicken pox.

Furthermore, I found her using same phone number but different Christian name and teach different subject to advertise. Why she use another name? Can you figure it out?

Word of mouth is the best. Anyplace can share the good or bad experience or tutor? But not offended anybody. So that all the parents are aware and avoid those black sheep.

The caller first gets my attention by saying she's from a tuition agency and asks if I'm a tutor. But after I tell her 'yes' she starts telling me about some loan or financial service. :lightrod: She probably got my contact info when I was signing up for assignments. Or maybe someone sold my info to her. Now I'll think twice about providing my info, especially NRIC number, to people claiming to be tuition agents.

He was an excellent tutor until he introduced investment opportunity.
Trusting him, my friend introduced another mother. These naive Korean mothers… invested $50,000 all together.
The teacher disappeared.
and he is nowhere to be found.

Totally agree! This kind of guy should be caught. Warn all your friends about this guy tutor. Heard a couple of my friends talking about him few months back. :mad:

This sick man again!!!! He has many photography equipment at his place right? my sis in law encountered him! She enrolled my 10 and 7 yr old nieces there. After 2nd lesson, the older girl told her mum that she find the teacher very creepy, kept smiling at her and praising that she is cute and will grow up to be a very pretty girl.( my niece looks mature for her age). He wanted to take a photo of the 2 girls in \"cute\" pose. Lucky we always warn them not to let strangers take their photo.


The poor girl burst into tears after that. My sis in law pulled them out right away and gave him a piece of her mind. She is still shaken till today. Gonna let her know about this!

Super sicko. To all parents, beware of him and protect our kids!

But recently I had just enrolled my son who is a sec 2 student with one of the tuition centre located in a HDB unit along Tampines St 72 blk 7** too for math. The building is located infront of poi ching pri. I was quite happy when i first visited them and thats why I enrolled my son in and got him to try out for a month. Their place looks very dark too and was told by the tutor he is a freelance photographer too. so i didnt think much about it.

But I was horrified when my son went for class for the first time. He came back and told me that he did nothing in class for the first lesson except talking and chit chatting with the teacher, initially I don believe what he said because I thought that is just an excuse for him not to attend the next time.

But on the second lesson, he told me he watched youtube videos during class and it took up about an hour time, the other hour, they only did 5 questions on Angles. I was so angry! I immediately withdraw him from the centre and I am here warning parents to be careful of that centre. Its owned by a man in his 40s with long white streaks of hair and a very tan dark skin petite woman in her 40s. I think they are husband and wife.

2 weeks after the incident, my son came home telling me that his friends in school were being stalked by the male tutor on FB. Apparently, the male tutor added my son on FB on the first lesson and now he is adding all my son's female friends on FB too and all these girls are only 13-15 years old. He told me that the male tutor added his female school mates and told them that he knew my son and he would like to know them too, he asked them out for dinner and movies and if they are interested to become models for him as he is a photographer. His female school mate came forward to ask him why is there a man claiming he knows my son and befriending her and asking her out?!!!

I am really horrified by this man's behavior and why is his wife allowing that?

I was recommended by someone and I went with my P1 girl for 1st lesson. Initially I thought it's a lady teacher. When I went up, I only saw the guy and there's nobody else in class.

I felt very uncomfortable after talking to him and the shady environment was really creepy. I decided to leave immediately with my girl.

Better to attend one with good reputation. Currently attending classes with a lady tutor. My girl enjoys attending her classes.

me too. It's so difficult to find good and credible teachers whom we can trust. I'm glad I sent my kids to a team of good teachers. The co-founder would even make effort, every lesson to check on the kids and make sure the classes are conducted effectively. She would highlight to me how my kids are doing and make sure they are always on their toes.

For finding a tutor, it's much better if the tutor is recommended by a friend u know well. In the end, it doesn't really matter whether the tutor is NIE trained, ex-school teacher, \"just\" an undergrad, or whatsoever... as long as he/she is suitable for your child and able to help your child. To be honest, there are so many NIE trained who can't really teach well.

I think there is a very important caveat to the above comment for primary school tutors at least. The primary school tutor must be up to date with current syllabus and teaching methods. For eg. in Science it is important that the child is taught the right key words and phrases to remember for each topic and that is possible if the tutor is up-to-date with current science focus.

As for Maths, similarly the teaching of models today in place of algebra means the primary school tutor must be aware and in a position to teach this effectively.

So it is important that you find out from your child after tuition is over as to whether the tutor is actually reinforcing what is taught in school or is using the tutor's own \"proven methods of success\".

I think tuition centre is ok if male teachers. But if one to one, I will prefer female tutors for my daughter.

Some male tutors that I know of are really good. Especially in physics and Bio. But really have to watch them while they are teaching or supervise them so we know whats going on. especially if have daughters.

For a start, if it's a one to one tuition, better have it at our own house and we are there or an adult is there to supervise. If the tutor prove to be trustworthy then can gain our trust.

Hi BinniePiggy, ask them for their credentials if they are going over to your place to teach. 1-1 tutors are usually trickier but there are really good ones out there.
