One needs to actively use it - with classmates, colleagues, etc.

I study at Tenrikyo, as schellen mentions. Tenrikyo is one of the many religions in Japan. \"Tenrikyo's worldly aim is to teach and promote the Joyous Life, which is cultivated through acts of charity and mindfulness called hinokishin.\" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenrikyo). Tenrikyo is not evangelist in any way. They are in fact, a bunch of very amusing, cheerful people with no airs whatsoever. I love the staff, esp. my current teacher. We just a got a new principal and he's very funny and cool, who strikes 1001 poses in photographs and can also play the one-man band. Oh, and the male teachers are always very popular with the girls.....

I digress.

The thing about Tenrikyo's courses is that it's relaxed and slow - provided you want that (good for busy people). They teach the same course materials as, say, Ikoma, but at half the pace. Lessons are 2 hours per week for each level. Costwise it's only $430 for a full year inclusive of textbook and membership fees (one level, there are a total of 7). JLPT prep course is $85.

In fact, if anyone wants to take the JLPT prep courses, this semester comes with my highest recommendation, cos the teacher doing it is very good. She's very nice, very smart, bubbly personality and dedicated. I'm going to miss her when she goes home next year.

JLPT3 prep is on Tues 6.30-8.40, starting Aug 4. I need to double-check which day JLPT2 prep is on, will get back. Registrations on open right now btw. You can call Lucien-san at 62214035 between 2-8pm to find out more.

sashimi

Reply to Studying Parent? on Tue, 28 Jul 2009 01:46:06 GMT

insider:
Thanks sashimi and schellen for your helpful advice!

My friends have been really working hard for JLPT1 as said and two of them ever been to Japan for two years to work and study the language and one other friend is a trader for Japanese market, basically use Japanese everyday in their work.

Schellen, do you mind to share which institution you go to for your JLPT2 lessons? My daughter is interested in pursuing it but somehow I know self study not easy (tho can tell that she is determined, still feel it's difficult to learn alone). Will get her to check the schedule of the institution to see whether she is keen to squeeze the lessons into her routine or not. Think probably she has to choose among her hot yoga and electric guitar lessons if want to take lessons for JLPT2. So got to depend on the schedule available...

You're welcome. It's at Tenrikyo Mission Center's Cultural Section, located at 25th floor of International Plaza (next to Tanjong Pagar MRT station). Although they are from a religious group, you do not have to convert or be subjected to their religious teachings, unless you choose to. I think sashimi can give you a better idea of the lesson schedule for classes since he'll be starting normal and JLPT3 prep classes next week. Or you can call them: 62214035 anytime from 3-8pm on weekdays and 10/11-4 on Saturdays. All lessons start next week. JLPT prep course is once a week and only one day (per level) so your DD may have to check her schedule first. It will end during the week of JLPT so this year, the week will be Nov 30-Dec 3. You pay for course materials, usage of facilities and a half-year membership that allows you to borrow stuff from their (small but comprehensive) library and join in their other activities. Teachers are here on a 2-year service as part of their religion, I think, so there are no tutor fees. We paid in cash so I don't know if cheques are accepted. No NETS or credit cards.

schellen

Reply to Studying Parent? on Tue, 28 Jul 2009 01:07:39 GMT

ZacK:

ChiefKiasu:
[quote=\"FMz\"]KS parent here who is presently studying part time.

Raise hand please

Quite a few... the two that come to mind are:
ZacK
EN
ChiefKiasu's DW (Does she count?)

Just received my module 1 results in the mail today... kekeke managed to scrape a pass... 4 marks away from fail grade actually ...
