<![CDATA[2013 School Holiday shorten?]]>hi parents here,


was on the moe website and happened to see that next yr 2013 holidays was somehow shorten... anyone notice this??

the dec holidays has always been 6 weeks, but next yr shows only 5 weeks. if u count by calendar days, 23-nov-2013 to 31-dec-2013 is 38 days only..

this yr 2012 holidays is from 16-nov-2012 to 31-dec-2012 which is 45 days..

Maybe because they are still in lower primary that's why. But it kinda makes me think that since they can complete the syllabus so quickly, maybe they should flesh it out a bit more. For DD's school I think they are pretty balanced but since left with so much time, maybe can introduce small scale projects for the kids. For DS, well, I think the teacher was able to complete the syllabus because she ate into a fair bit of their music and art classes, even PE as well. :razz:


As for holidays, I prefer long stretches. I'd rather combine the 2 term breaks into the semester breaks. Find that 1 week break after the term a bit disruptive. Just when the engine finally fully cranked and running, they break, causing it to slow down somewhat.

Perhaps OK for the mid yr holidays.

For year end, 1st 2 weeks is holiday mood...then next 2 wks many travelling...last 2 wks is festive mood....

Look at Malaysia's school holidays I think June is 2 weeks only.

I would rather they do not rush the syllabus. Give the child more time to absorb and internalise.

I would refuse unless my child had performed really badly the previous year and it was kind of remedial.

this i totally agree. for year end holidays, kids should not have to return to school at all...teachers themselves should enjoy a break.

I think for most families with working parents the longer the holiday, the bigger the problem. We can't take leave for the whole school holidays which means the children are either at home bored (if you have someone to look after them) or we are spending money to send them to camps etc. to keep them busy. I agree that they need a break but I would prefer it to be a bit shorter. We have already had so many days of school being closed this term and the holidays haven't even started.

I went to school in the UK where we had 6 weeks in the summer but as it was summer we would go and stay with my grandparents by the sea or if we were at home we would be playing outside all day every day. You don't see Singapore children do that much and it's not safe now to let them play outside alone.

maybe that's true for many parents here... for me, i stop camps and enrichments for them as i want them to self study at home with me... i hv relatives offering to bring them out now and then so i dun really take leave to stay at home with them...

What I find funny is that it directly contradicts your wish that \"shorter is better\" when you get more days of holidays if we don't start school on Jan 2. 🙂
I know it contradicts but the Jan 2nd thing is ridiculous - we all have to rush the end of our year-end break to get them back to school.

My parents live overseas which means that now the children are at school we will never be able to visit them for New Year but will have to come back after Christmas spoiling both the holiday and wasting our public holiday. They cannot come here as they need to be with my grandmother.

But it will be more sensible. If Jan 2nd falls on a Thursday it doesn't make sense to start school. And given that Jan 1st is a public holiday it prevents families from taking advantage of that to go away for a holiday or even to do much on New Year's Day - who is going to have a busy day out when the next day is the first day of school?

I think you will find many other countries will always start school term on a Monday.

Term 1 starts from week 0 instead of week 1

First day of school is 02 Jan 2013 (Wed)..

In the past, regardless of which weekday school started, it was counted as Term-1 Week-1..

But for 2013, Term-1 Week-1 is 07 Jan 2013 - 11 Jan 2013.. So, 02 Jan 2013 - 04 Jan 2013 (Wed - Fri) are 3 extra days in Term-1 (can be considered as Term-1 Week-0)..

Hence, 2013 Term-1 has 10.5 weeks, so year-end school holiday is shortened by 1 week..
