Can live out in church or elsewhere?
2) really legal?

I would love to have a live out FDW but a FDW that works only 3 days get paid for S$300, need to pay her levy (S$265/170??), cost more than our local full-time babysitter/nanny!!

This is not the first time I see live-out maid ad. Gu***** has maids posting ad themselves, finding live-out jobs.

For the last few months, I have employed a live-out part-time Philippino helper who lives at a church mission in north-western Singapore and comes to my house 3 days a week. We are moving back to Australia and now Zeny needs new family to work for.

It is an entirely legal arrangement so Zeny has a domestic worker's permit and the agent I signed her contract with explained that so long as her employer knows where she stays at night, Zeny is allowed to live outside her employer's home.

Zeny has previous experience working in Singapore (she worked for a Chilean family here for several years), she can cook, she cleans and does the laundry and has a lovely manner with our two young sons. She is a trained midwife, but needs part-time work so she can continue her church activities.

She asks for a half salary of $300 for 3 days work a week. You also have to pay the standard govt levy each month.

Zeny can transfer to a new employer this month.

I find this arrangement to be perfect for us - having tried a live-in maid and found that it didn't work for our family, with Zeny we have the benefits of regular cleaning work, one night of babysitting a week and all the privacy we want in our own home when she leaves!

http://i45.tinypic.com/1p9gcx.jpg\">

Reply to Spore MOM allows live out maids?? on Tue, 04 Dec 2012 17:03:22 GMT

If one were to leave home, work under ‘harsh’ conditons, it has to count for something, right? Stay on track, focus on the objective to make a better life, help support family and make as much money as one can, would you agree?

Maid job or any job, if they can choose to follow instructions; they only need to do this one thing, they can get very far to win the employer’s trust and favour to keep their job and eventually many extras eg. gifts and money.

If they show that they cannot follow instructions, how do we trust our household to them? Will they clean thoroughly, will my child be drinking from a dirty cup, will she be fed at all? Will mum get the right medicene at the right time? Will she be bringing BF home.

How to trust her with important and big things when she cannot even follow simple instructions.

How to keep a receptionist if she does not want to answer phones or greet visitors that come to the office. Can she follow instructions to answer phones as instructed… or does she just answer any way she feels like it? or worse…yak on the phone all day and not answering calls…

A maid’s job is housekeeping, clean, wash, iron, cook, tidy everything to make the house look neat and BE clean, not just look clean. They don’t seem to understand the job. Some families need more help with kids and old folks etc, the maid makes choices who she wants to work for. Some like kids, so it’s less boring and they get to go out and fun with kids. Some prefer housework, cleaning.

If the chores are not done properly, does having a handphone help? Does having Every Sunday off help? Will giving her these things, make her work better. We all know that we are fooling ourselves if we say it will.

Very few people like to work, not many like to clean.

While our forefathers hv slogged to provide us the life we live today, we should be grateful and showing the same empathy for these group of migrant workers are only human.

It may be true the maids have signed the contract to come and work here - but they do not have a choice when there are no jobs back home - and to feed one’s child and family sometimes made one go into desperate measures. We as the employers should empathize with them and should not be taking advantage.
I am one of the lucky few whom has been successful in life through the sacrifice my father has gone through - sleeping in the streets for 4 months when he first get to Singapore in the 1930s, choose to save 10 cents and walk 40 mins to work and working day and nite to raise his 8 children whom all turned out to be good individuals.
My dad did make a choice to face the harsh life by choosing to board the vessel which took him 20 days to arrive in Singapore. He did made a choice to sleep in the streets and probably received the same treatment as how most people treated the maids with arrogance, and he did made a choice to choose to sweat just to save 10 cents to send his kids to school. He was despised by many being an illiterate immigrant but live a fulfilling life - not only raising his 8 children to be successful but building a mansion back in his village and using the money we gave him to build a school in his village and renovating the village temple. And he passed on last year as a well respected person.
Let’s not forget where we come from, treat people with the same grace you could like to be treated and we can all stopped going to our churches or temples to ask for blessing
