I agree with your sharing. Essentially, how good a school is depends very much on the quality of the students it receives. The general thinking is: good schools will attract good students, so if I get into a \"good\" school, my child will have a chance to interact with \"good\" students and teachers and hence become \"good\".

There's nothing wrong with this thinking, except that such thinking will ultimately drive schools to become more and more elitist, and it leaves out the possibility of really good students/teachers getting into \"average\" schools. I still remember several years ago, Qifa suddenly had the top scorer in PSLE and after that, interest in the school increased tremendously.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter if we think a school is \"good\" or \"average\". We know that MOE will provide the necessary support to ALL schools which will sit for the same final exam. It is up to the individual to excel. The school will merely bask in its students' glory.

The biggest question is: does the school and other circumstance provide the impetus for the student to WANT to do well? The answer is really as varied as the total number of students in the country.

ChiefKiasu

Reply to Chongfu Primary on Sat, 18 Jun 2022 15:30:47 GMT

onejett\" post_id=\"2023372\" time=\"1620569375\" user_id=\"191926:

I am a mom who has 2 kids in this school. If your child has a lower ability to cope academically, you can expect a steeper learning curve for your child.

Providing last minute tuition for your child may end up wasting your money if you do not get a qualified and highly experienced private tutor.

Personally, through my connection, I know of a few children in CF who are extremely weak in their academics. Would they do better if they have gone to another neighbourhood school ? Maybe.

If you are choosing a school for your child, choose one not for the name but one that your child can flourish in.

It’s not the end of the world even if your child cannot enter CF during P1 registration. Lastly, seek help for your child, be it early interventions or academic tuition as early as possible. Seeking last minute help at P6 is too late.

sembgal

Reply to Chongfu Primary on Sat, 27 Nov 2021 09:08:50 GMT

Appletart\" post_id=\"2046573\" time=\"1637044630\" user_id=\"88700:

Any parent aware of how P3 students are streamed into P4 classes in Chongfu?

Overall average I think.

onejett

Reply to Chongfu Primary on Tue, 16 Nov 2021 06:37:10 GMT

Any parent aware of how P3 students are streamed into P4 classes in Chongfu?

Some parents think the school isn't assigning enough homework, some parents think the school is assigning too much. Some parents love the drilling, some parents think it's best to leave it once understanding is achieved. As no two parents (and their philosophy towards education) are alike, and no two schools (even among MOE schools) are alike, it's better to understand / compare and go for a school that's a better fit rather than go for a school because everyone is after it.

On CCA - every school will have some pluses and minuses; no schools will have every CCA available (e.g. my daughter's school doesn't have the sport that she's involved in as well). Some parents don't see it as an important component of education. However, if it's essential to a parent, it's best to research and find out what's available before applying.

On teaching quality - every school will have good teachers and bad teachers, some schools will have more of the other. I won't comment unless I have a valid basis of comparison, such as having my child in Chongfu. Nonetheless, I believe it's uncommon for a school (even in 'top schools') to have every teacher living up to the parents' expectations.

On oral / exam format - different schools do different things. I'm assuming they have their reasons for doing what they do, especially if they the (past) results to show for. The school (system) doesn't cater for individual needs - they can only identify the common denominator and do what's required. If need be, parents would have to get involved and help to brush up / beef up on the child's weaker areas. Unfortunately, that's just the reality of how things work, given the general constraints.

*While Chongfu is no doubt a popular school, it isn't a bona fide \"名校\". IMHO \"名校\" typically refers to the GEP or SAP schools. I won't call it a middle ranking neighbourhood school either as it's a lot more than that. Chongfu should be among a number of historical schools that has consistently produced relatively good results over the years.

https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/article/chongfu-primary-school/

floppy

Reply to Chongfu Primary on Mon, 31 May 2021 03:00:21 GMT

It’s disheartening to read these about CF. It is a rare non SAP school that offers HCL starting P1, isn’t it an advantage to score better to get into a good secondary school? That is of cause provided that they can do well in this subject.
