Her class position is the last few in class, though overall performance is slightly above cohort average. She is asking to be taken out of the class to join a mixed-ability class where she was before, in P4. Reasons being that she does not want to be in a competitive class with an equally competitive teacher. And I believe key issue is she felt the teacher is ‘rushing’ through curriculum and she could not catch up. She hopes to be allocated to a ‘slower pace’ class. But knowing next year is the crucial PSLE year, I believe whichever class she will be in, the teacher’s stress level will be as high and will be pressured to ‘complete’ the curriculum within the shortest frame of time so that revision can commence. If this is the case, will there be any difference which class she is in? Or would it be better if we send her for tuition to raise her competency level such that she could ‘catch up’ with the teacher’s ‘rushed’ manner of covering the curriculum? In actual fact, she has been having enrichment classes for EL and CL since she was smaller. And just 2 months ago, we sent her for Math tuition. Seeing good progress in her Math (just managed an ‘A’ for SA2 as compared to ‘B’ and ‘C’ in previous tests this year) although not meeting her teacher’s ‘expectation’ of above 80%.

Anyone has any views based on the above?

The school only showed class ranking but did away with level ranking. Similar with another forumner, they will show the mean, sd, etc... so that parents get a gauge on where their kids stand despite the lack of level ranking info.

Personally.. I rather have level ranking than class ranking as I think it's more informative. But yes, the school did away with that with the reasoning of weaker students. How will kid feel if they are last in level???

dd1 did top 10 in her class. They have a cca mate who is in average class and he is no. 1 in his class. His overall score is at least 30 marks different from dd1. I was like... wow... his parents are so lucky finally got a chance to be invited to school. I never have a chance yet and it's obvious my neck is getting longer ... dd1 and ds was like.. wow if dd1 go to average class, she has a chance to go up the stage. We were pleasantly surprised to receive the cert that dd1 is top 25% in her school level. We were very excited and happy. Just felt so satisfied... yes... never been to prize giving before but at least that cert is like a assurance to us that she is not bad....

ds is going to a average class in P5. We were telling him that since all the big fishes are out of the way... try to do his best to be a big fish. Mum is not greedy... err what about aim for top 3??? Think about the cca mate who achieved top 1 in class. We hope that will be a motivation for him but hopefully his overall score is much better.

Frankly, he has the same external resource provided to him like dd1. For school teachers... I feel that sometimes it's heng suay question. dd1 has a very good Ft for maths and science this year so I felt that with his teaching and enrichment classes, I see her grow and perform. I heard the ft will be the same in P6 Actually before hols, he asked us to get some notes on algebra from the website to prepare for P6.... :xedfingers: she will sustain her momentum for PSLE and can get into her desired school.... We are not \"greedy\". Told her if she gets 238 is good enough for her desired school but her target is 240 and anything above 240 is good. She has told us that she is not interested in overly competitive schools. So she has a mind of her own.

MMM

Reply to Best class... need views on Thu, 29 Nov 2012 08:46:43 GMT

some schools from my neighbourhood sch have no longer only one best class. In sec 1 & 2 it was ok. I was still among the top 10 in the class. But in sec 3 & 4, I ended up among the bottom. I did not want to go to pure science however due to my results I was posted there. Appeals to my principal led to me being sent to wash the toilet to reflect on my defiance as I did not have parental approval to switch class. Initially it was tough, my confidence was affected, self esteem suffered but eventually I got over it. And my dad told me to look further than just class position. A better gauge will be to look at the whole cohort. Being top in the worst performing class and thinking you are already very good is a false sense of security when you are being pit against a much bigger group. Do not forget that it is not just the school either it is the whole cohort in Singapore. That was his take. Better be an average among the best of the best than to be the best among the weakest.

Those were the days when after each exam everyone will be asking what position we got. I thought nowadays, most schools do not rank the kids. Only top n mean scores of the cohort are revealed.

I told kiddos to aim high but of course I will be there to moderate unrealistic goals. I don’t care if they are at the bottom of the class, so long as they are still average or above average of the cohort. And it should not matter that much to them either as schooling is about learning not about class position. So like my father I’d rather kiddos be medium fish in big pond than big fish in small pond.
