<![CDATA[BPGH, SJI, NHHS]]>Hi parents,


We have shortlisted a few schools, among are BPHS NHHS and SJI. I suppose they r quite similar in terms of academic driven. SJI is well known of its focus on students charecter n leadership development. NHHS is SAP sch with strong Chinese culture n values where students are well disciplined. BPHS was a pleasant surprize to us when we visited the sch this morning - the students presented very well in the intro session as well as the guided tour by their councillors.

In the dilema as to placement n sequence of choices now! Leave aside the fact thatSJI is further fr home, can parents give yr thought on these schools. Thanks inadvance

DS pri sch is affiliated to SJI although we were very tempted to choose BPGH. I like the environment there and the many varied talents. Been to NHGH and like the clementi compound but travelling is not a direct route; need to change buses etc. But ds has good score for HMT so +3 if he gets in to NHGH.


Our choice which we submitted tonight was SJI, NHGH and BPGH. Hopefully he gets in to any of these schools.

Based on the map I think it is Exit D, towards the bus interchange. Anyway holding site is only in 2014/2015, next year still at Malcolm Road.

Based on COP, schools' reputation and distance. I suppose all of them r good in their ways, so it's really a difficult decision! It doesn't help that my son does not have a strong preference on either one!

Hi Julongmum. We are in the same dilemma as you - chosing between BPHS and SJI, maybe Nanhua as well.

I know bus # 190 goes to SJI in Malcolm road directly via Expressway, about 30mins from CCK Interchange.

Hi JRLam, these r definitely our chosen sch but have yet decided on the sequence. DS score is very closed to their COP, so it is important to place the right order of our preference.

Do u stay in cck? If so, it is easy to take direct express bus 190 fr there. Distance is a major consideration for me :scratchhead:

BPGH - think it has N(A) & N(T) streams as well

if u look, all 3 schools are consistently in band 1/2 but I think SJI has the lowest cut off score, they also take in students from the feeder schools with a lower cut off but able to value add to them

We went for SJI open house on 17Nov so I hope we can share some information and make the best choice for our kid. Following are my personal opinion :

Firstly, BPGH and NHHS will be O levels track. SJI, there's the option of IP or O levels. If you want your child to do IP track then clearly it is SJI-IP. If it is O levels track then need to consider the difference of the 3 schools, noting that only SJI has affilated JC (only impt for O level track).

NHHS, SAP school. My ds is also not strong in mother tongue. I have been trying to get feedback in this forum and also from friends about the non-HMT classes/kids in this school but I still have very sketchy info. Can you share more about this with me since your ds went for their camp ? I understand that major of the cohort will take HMT and those taking 普华 will be in a \"non-banded\" class, is it true ?

My friends said in CCK area, this school's papers are the toughest, ie. they are academically very driven which could explain why the school was previously ranked band 1/2. We didn't go for the open house but we'll go for the school talk/tour tomorrow. Seems like you have a good impression of this school ?

The school focused more on character development (looking out for those in need) and not so much academically driven. We also went to the Bishan ITE site yesterday, the building is rather old. NhHS - majority r taking HCL. The non HCL will group together and separated with HCL during the CL lessons. There is no banding in this arrangement. There is usually slightly more students starting yr 3 cos they have dropped HCL after not able to sustain the grade at yr 2 yrend exam.

BPGH - basically was impressed with the councillors who guided us around the sch. She spoke well n answered all our questions diligently. Also watched a few of the rest who presented the sch well. We missed the open house, so it was merely a short sch intro n guided tour yesterday. There was only 2 staff around cos the P n VP werent available. The eventwas well run by the councillors.

SJI - undoubtly its a good sch, only hesitant due to long traveling

Meaning the current ITE Bishan (holding site for SJI in 2014/5) will be renovated before 2014 ?

Before our visit to the sch yesterday, we only know some of its basic sch info fr the grey bk. The students we met were all councillors and they did impressed us a lot. As we hardly meet its students outside the sch (Not stay in CCK) we arent sure most of the rest of the students behave. Mine child is a boy so i kind of look at sch with better behavioural children to avoid chances of bad influence.

I agree sch is good, it grooms the councillors so well n let them run the event of receiving parents with very little teacher involvement!

Last week Dd n I went to BPGHS open house. The student councillors there were very polite n managed to ans all our doubts. I tot they were from upper sec, but they told us they were actually sec 1 students! Without any hesitation, my dd who scored 248 decide to put this sch as 1st choice.

I stay in west too and the above few schools are also in my list of consideration for my boy when the time comes. If he qualifies la.
My only input I can share will be, what are your son's views about the school. Is he resentful to going SAP school? Does he prefer a boys school? Personally, I feel that sji is the one with distance disadvantage. But it is also a unique one offering all boys education and stronger school identity from what I read here.

Husband's take is if getting a certificate is the goal, opt for nearest. Nanhua is good if kids chinese is good. But if it is the school experiences we want for the kid,we should look out for those who can provide more than usual academic focus. This, have to go experience during school walk round and gather feedback.

My DS had visited NHHS and BPHS but not SJI as he was in a holiday camp. He enjoyed the camp organized by NHHS, amazed of the biometric attendance taking device in BPHS, he has no strong preference to any of these and basically he will go with our decision.

Yes i agree with you that SJI has travelling disadvantage. Its good as my DS mother tongue is not strong, he might have to struggle if he is in NHHS. However NHHS has a hugh intake (12 classes) all in express course so there is more competitive in academic, opportunity to certain programs as sch usually selects the better performed students. Aside fr this consideration, NNHS is quite safe as in student discipline n values. BPHS has only 5 classes of express course, i suppose it is easier for the above average student to get more attention n higher chances of getting into class of subject combi of their choice in sec 3.

Choosing sec sch is very critical as it determines where our dearest will be in the next four yrs n he can learn n make the most from it n lead him to somewhere he desires after sec education. More importantly he has to be happy going there and bringing full loads of merry memorables at the end of the 4 yrs.

if the sec school is affiliated to the JC, you got two points discount when applying to the JC using O level's L1R5 total points

eg, your L1R5 is 12, and with affiliation discount, your net score is 10 points, and if your have CCA 1 point, then you get to deduct one more point, using 9 points to enter the JC...if eg the JC's COP is 10, you are sure to get in even though officially your L1R5 is 12. without this affiliation, u would not have been able to enter
