For me, it depends on need. If they need to catch up, we will work on the material. I don't teach schoolwork ahead of school because I want them to learn how to learn in class, and I'm lazy. But not all academic work is schoolwork, and if they are interested, they are free to read and learn anything they want to, as long as it's not from next year's textbooks. The school there really doesn't teach enough. The 2-month-long summer vacation is a time for some kids to work on the syllabus as well as their weak areas. Of course, that doesn't mean it's all work and no play.

For myself, it will be \"Go practise your instruments!\" early in the morning, followed by some study time. After that, it will be rest and relax time. They are free to play, read, draw or watch shows. I strongly believe if we see learning and studying as an enjoyable part of our daily life, then the kids will need no prompting to \"work hard\" when school starts.

Having said that, we are already planning for a get-away week before school reopens. :imcool:

metz

Reply to Revise or pre-teach academic stuff during hols? on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 02:16:08 GMT

Mawar:

slmkhoo:
[quote=\"HAPPYH\"]Yes...... Kids are far more capable of daily chores than we think. Actually, I feel we adults are the culprits in hindering our kids' learning to handle more stuffs. When they were younger (3 or 4 years old), I couldn't bear for them to help out with house chores even though they were willing. My mindset then was to pamper them as much as possible. Fortunately, living abroad left me without much choice. By and by, my kids started to take on more responsibilities. Just June this year, my son started preparing simple food such as porridge, omelette, french toasts etc for us. I am glad for my little helpers. They make my life so much easier, especially when my husband is not around and we have no helpers.

But when my husband joins us, I think they will be pampered again. He can't bear for them to even fold their own clothes, let alone do other chores! :stupid:

metz

Reply to Revise or pre-teach academic stuff during hols? on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 02:08:35 GMT

Kiddos’ only chores will be to maintain their own rooms, like making their beds, keeping their toys and books, etc. That they have been doing.
