To help her, I used simpler materials for her to catch up and build confidence. My worst subject was/is maths. Recalling my experience, for me when faced with too many difficult situation with maths, like haven’t understood one concept and then faced with another new concept, my young mind just shut down and I was unable to study maths. It was only at JC level that I had the mental strength to overcome the maths barrier and break through the barriers and wanted to overcome the various difficult maths concepts. That time I willingly took on A maths at AO level, I didnt take A maths at sec level, and even seek extra paid help so that I could take the exams within 10 months (should be less) rather than to wait another yr. At that time, if I relied on school teacher, I had to wait till the 2nd yr to take the exams. I think I achieved a B3 or B4, now for many this is not fantastic grade right? But for someone who had been hating maths, failing maths, it’s a great grade. I was ecstatic. LOL.

I believe if I had help, in primary school, like what I did with dd1, pulling back and teaching one level down, I may have a better experience with maths. Now, 2 yrs later, dd1 loves reading, I have to stop her from reading during meal times. LOL. I think sometimes, we need to pull back and not to be at the same pace as the rest.

Although the Eng syllabus is new to Singapore, the skills that the syllabus is trying to cultivate is not new in other countries. If you cannot find materials in Popular that can help your dd, there are materials in US, UK and Aust. You can use Amazon, Fishpond, Bookdepository.

All the best to you
