I was a SAHM for 21 years.
I returned to the workforce after the kids got older and independent. It was a steep curve as I left the workforce in 1999. So much has changed. It’s really not easy to deal with the job scope and the micro managing boss.

Among those I know (and myself), most see it as a temporary phase, although possibly one that could last up to 10 yrs, I guess. For me, I was a SAHM for 17 yrs, mostly because I had kids and we lived overseas for most of those years. Working wasn’t feasible. Even after returning to Sg, I only worked freelance/part-time and did voluntary work because one of my kids needed more support (learning and other needs). Otherwise, I would probably have returned to full-time work. For those I know who became permanent SAHM, it’s mainly because they are wealthy enough not to need the 2nd income, and for some, they are very involved in something else - eldercare, voluntary work, etc.

I don’t know what “other countries” PM was referring to, but from what I’ve seen, women will return to work after the SAHM years when they have (or can afford) more home help, or working hours are more flexible, and their children are expected to be more independent.

Just realised I replied to a very old post! Different PM then. Doesn’t changed my response.

I’m a mom, I have two kids; I switched to freelance editorial jobs when my first child was born — I was lucky to be able to do that quite easily as a writer. I didn’t really have a long-term plan/vision, but within 3 months of becoming a parent, my gf was already texting me to see if I was ready to proofread.

Eventually, some of the jobs became recurring assignments that paid better, but this took a long time for me.

When my son was in upper primary (he’s now in sec school), I was already thinking about a career reset, and I wanted to try tech. It was a pretty long path of doing a specialist dip, followed by joining a bootcamp, getting placed in an unrelated role because of industry conditions, and securing a traineeship. It’s definitely not a straightforward path! But it taught me a lot, and I gained good friends in this journey.

Happy to share more, and hear from others!
