Since she took the SPERS exam, she would have received a list of schools that her results qualified her for? So those are the schools that she can transfer to.

2. That is her current school’s internal stream transfer criteria. The new school that she is seeking transfer to may not allow her to go directly into Express as it may be two major changes for her (school envt + academic envt). Do check with the school first before u commit.

3. Pasir Ris Crest Sec has a good Fencing CCA i believe (they are one of the few schools that took in DSA Fencing candidates). Do try that school if she qualifies. It’s in the East nearer to your home.

U dont have to wait till end of sec 1 or sec 2 to seek a transfer, if u have compelling reasons like bullying. Just email the school(s) to check if they have a vacancy now; for NA it is possible that they can take her in now. Coz my girl didnt apply so we only know the numbers from hearsay. The 100 applicants were actually shortlisted by school to do a written test on site in the school. Her friends had gone for the test, and even interview. But none in her class got in. In total, we do not know how many sec 2s (internal and external) applied. Every year, 10 additional places are available for sec 3 entry. Application was to be made by sec 2 end June/early July. Outcome will only be released after EOY. So sec 1 results are crucial too I guess. Most top kids got above 75% overall, and many even have 80% too. So to be outstanding, overall average of 85% stands a higher chance.

Are your two older boys alr in year 5 or 6?

If you are asking for another boy scoring AL7 to apply for ACSI O level in hope to follow the footsteps of his brothers, it would be quite accurate account as you have shared about your impression and observation above. You liked how ACSI has provided an all rounder education to your boys. Hence, it would be safe to make same assumption for your younger kid if he is a boy even if in O level. But do bear in mind, in another school, even though a sister school, how things are done, how it is run, could be different. IB is a 2 year post secondary program, correct me if I am wrong. In sg, we are often referring to IP leading to IB from year 1 to 4. The 4 years in MGS is IP which will lead to IB in year 5 and 6 in ACSI. How sister school carried out IP, may or may not be different from ACSI. So if IB is what is desired, there is still an option to enter ACSI IB after O level. Then your girl would be able to choose ACSI in O level route.

My girl enjoyed PTK a lot in sec 1 and 2 and did very well, though not an exam subj. She is enjoying her sec school life tremendously and still have capacity to continue piano, community volunteering and other own things. Though in O level, there are also projects, group work and individual assisgnments, discussions. MGS do provide holistic education whether IPIB or O. The other aspects critical thinking, creativity and global perspectives you have mentioned for IB, could they be also offered in IP? Coz your girl's score of AL7 qualifies for IP too.

I know another O level school is also providing global perspectives lessons though not an exam subj. So the other aspects could be also covered in other schools as well. The education scene is changing and many of us may not be updated with the current implementations. Hence, visiting open houses and asking more in depth questions at the P talk will be helpful.

00skyblue00

Reply to Transferring Secondary School at Sec 2 on Thu, 23 Nov 2023 01:26:34 GMT

Hi, 00skyblue00.

I personally think IB is more rigorous and comprehensive, as it not only emphasizes academic excellence but also fosters a holistic approach to education by promoting critical thinking, creativity, and a global perspective. Can join student ambassador for open houses or events.

I know of transfer using sec one results. It was quite last min, applied at sec 1 year end and was notified by new school at start of sec 2. Imagine to buy uniform and textbooks, though books are largely the same. Your child may make the application now if she wishes. Better to be coming from the student than the parents as there will be challenges if her transfer request is successful. She will have to adjust to new school, new class (as most students will already know each other), new CCA, new school culture etc. Yes, she will have to be more proactive to get to make new friends and be thick skin. If transfer from co-ed to girls school, there will be differences too as girls tend to stay in and protective within their own groups. She can learn to step out of comfort zone. If she is the sociable type, it will be easier.

Whether her request is successful depends on vacancy availability and how she make her case to the school of choice. Why is she asking for a transfer, why choose this school etc. Usually new school prefer the reasons to be postive and not negative. Eg. school is nearer home and shorter travelling time or moved house, she always wanted this school and worked very hard in sec one in hope for a transfer, this school was her first choice in sec 1 posting etc. School may be concerned of some students who are unable to cope well in new school after transfer so they want to be assured that student will make effort and stay positive when facing challenges. Eg, if she meet another same type of teachers(not meet her expectations) in new school, she cannot ask for a transfer again so how would she resolve the problem etc. Most impt is the student can learn to seek help from other sources, not just blame other students for not cooperative or teachers for not meeting her expectations. As she proceed to even university, she will realised that there will be a lot of times, her expectations were not met with lousy lecturers etc.

I know of students will form own study groups and help each other to study and ask questions among themselves. They emerge as winners with good results despite mediocre teachers. Some will get materials from other classes with better teachers, some even approach the better teachers for consultation. Always remaining positive and hopeful.

not to worry too much about sec 1, was told sec 1 is a year for students fresh from primary schools to trial and error and slowly adjust. I do believe sec 2 will become more consequential. But if your child is the very serious type then it is better not to stress her unnecessarily. Do spend more quality time with her and illuminate to her.

00skyblue00

Reply to Transferring Secondary School at Sec 2 on Sun, 19 Nov 2023 01:43:07 GMT

Hi! They tend to reuse previous year exam papers questions or the ones they have put in practice papers.

I am fine with her transferring but I am worried if her CCA attendance of 2 years will be forfeited if she does transfer and goes to a different CCA (As the school she wants to go does not have the CCA she is currently in) and I am not sure what the competition will be like of she transfer at the end of sec 2 in 2024. So stressed now. However, I must caution you that when you transfer schools from GCE 'O'-level to an IP school, the competition would increase many folds as you will encounter many more students who are as dedicated as yourself and you must be prepared for the increased competitiveness.
