Just to give a little background : I started as a TV producer in TCS (yest, way before there was an MCS) and have been running my own talent agency for the past 13 yrs, managing Celebrity Artistes.

I have been asked time and again by parents who want to get their kids into TV or commercials, HOW DO I GO ABOUT DOING IT?

There have also been times, which sadly, the parents have found themselves not paid or unfairly treated by BAD production houses.

I will try to help answer your questions as best as I can.

I will however, not answer questions of which agency is best or if XYZ production house is bad.

But feel free to ask me any relevant questions and I will share to the best of my abilities, and so that the knowledge will be shared to many.

Well to answer THE QUESTION:

"So how do I get my kid started ? "

So here goes :
1) Classes or courses : Some training will be good. There are plenty of holiday classes and drama schools for kids out there. I say send them to class cos there, they will get a dose of what is required from them (eg, patience, learning to work with other actors, movement etc). From there, you can judge if your child would like to get into entertainment or not.

I’ve seen kids refusing to do acting or go for auditions, purely because they have no idea what it’s about. But when the parents send them to short holiday courses (sometimes they go kicking & screaming , they learn wht it’s all about and its not so scary in the end and they end up getting excited about doing acting for TV or commercials.

2) Next, you will need to go for auditions. MCS being the only local TV station, you will have to audition there 1st. Then look for production houses, and find out which ones are doing children productions (like for OKTO) and ask for an audition. Simply google "Auditions" and I’m sure you’ll find loads.

Now, note that if you go to a casting and the casting director wants to collect money from you…RUN!!! DO NOT PAY!! A casting director’s job is to see as many talents and find the right one for the job. They would not put a fee to audition you.

3) Headshots : I know there are lots of agencies out there who represent kids and will tell you to get photos done. YES, HEADSHOTS ARE NECC. A headshot to an actor is like a stethoscope to a doctor. You wont visit a doc who does not own a stethoscope right?

Now, that does not mean you need to spend a few hundred or thousand of dollars taking photos. Some good shots can easily be taken with your own digital photo. Once again, google for what makes a good headshot and you’ll find many examples.

Well, here are 3 simple steps to get you started.

Just to give a little background : I started as a TV producer in TCS (yest, way before there was an MCS) and have been running my own talent agency for the past 13 yrs, managing Celebrity Artistes.

Because I cast for TV commercials & Films & TV my question to you is "why are you sending your child to modeling courses?"

If your aim is to get her be more expressive and more outgoing , to learn communication skills. There really are quite a number of kids modelling courses out there that you can sign her up to.

Do note that they WILL ask you to sign up for expensive photoshoots to get headshots for your child. Headshots are important so its up to you to judge if you can afford it. I wld not spend more than $200 on it.

If they promise your child auditions, here are some things to note:
1) Find out what the job is about eg: is it a print shoot, TV commercial
2) what role your child is playing…eg:dancing, playing in the pool
3) what s/he needs to wear to audition. If she’s playing a child waiting for school bus, best to go in school uniform. If she is playing on a beach…beachwear…you get the drift. Dont wear swim suits though.
4) Most important : Make sure you are there at the audition and make sure you can attend the shoot.

Hope this helps.
