<![CDATA[Any NJCians or VJcians Out there?- VJC VS NJC ?]]>I have obtained nett 4 points and am living in the serangoon area. Having zoned in on the above two JCs, i am uncertain which should be a better choice. Personally, i am inclined towards NJC as the school has a really good environment-many open areas and nice landscaping- but that is not the point. I am unsure of the vibe of the school, but it has been mentioned in many threads that NJCians are overall more introverted. VJCians are at the other end of the spectrum-extroverted and outgoing. I am rather reserved and am not sure if i will fit in at VJC. I hope to be able to obtain leadership opportunities-despite my reticence but know that i stand little chance in VJC; would NJC ,thus, be a better option? Besides, none of my friends are planning to go into NJC

They only see each other during lectures (gp,bio,phy,math,econs) and maybe in econs class and as well as CCA obviously.

And don't mix with the mugger types that always study during breaks - it's boring.

Idk if PE is allowed ;3 I don't have any more PE attire either so that's useless! 😧

Yeah, but it's also progressive grading.. Like not your entire grade is based on a final paper. At least 20% of your grade is marked internally so you can try and improve on it if you don't do well.. As compared to A levels, once you hand in your paper you can't change anything anymore...

I don't think school cultures matter that much, because at the end of the day most people want to get a good A level grade to get them to university - at least that was what I was aiming for.


In VJ, if you want to join the students council, you have to make a speech in front of your \"house\" (of which there are 6) and people will vote you in. I think this is the most straightforward out of all the leadership groups BUT, you must be prepared to spend a lot of time in school planning activities. (actually, all leadership groups will be very time consuming)

Then there is the CT council, of which you just need your class to elect you for it, and you will automatically be filtered into the leadership group. (CT council is like a class representative thing)

Lastly, there is the house committee, which is the most rah-rah of all the leadership groups - I was part of the house committee and I remember doing the most insane things like doing cheers on top of canteen tables and shamelessly asking everyone to vote for me. Still, I did enjoy my time and it really made me a lot more confident. (I don't think the school considers the house committee a leadership group anymore, so you have to clarify that)

My friends from NJ tell me the environment there is rather \"mugger-ish\" but to be honest, VJ is the same, when exams come around the school is so quiet and people are all scrambling to book consultation timings and photocopying papers. In fact, all JCs will be about the same because everyone has the same aim - to make it to university and score in the A levels.

And because school activities are normally so time consuming and will take up the most of your march and september holidays, I would advice you to choose whichever is nearer to your house so that you get enough rest everyday because when school is at its busiest (with activities and not exams) you can sometimes go home latest around 11pm.

BUT, don't be alarmed cause they do hold CCAs for 2 weeks before exams so you get time to study. And, don't be intimidated if other people seem more rah-rah than you, push yourself to do it if you want a leadership position, it will go a long way when you start applying for scholarships later.

(there's this thing called the top 3 achievements, some of my friends didn't have much to write, but if you can easily fill it up it will be a good bonus on top of your grades)

Hi I'm in a similar dilemma! I live around Serangoon too. I'm quite introverted as well and because of that I've decided to choose NJC, I think there will be more opportunities open as opposed to VJC where people are more outspoken. Also, I have friends who will be there too so that helps! And NJC's building is nicer over VJC's haha no offense, and that shouldn't be a deciding factor actually but I quite like NJC. About the stereotypes, there are generally two responses: Majority claim that it is a mugger school; fewer claim it is not. I guess ultimately it depends on the type of people you mix with and I'm sure in NJC we'll be able to find our own groups of people? A senior of mine says that in NJC, there are students coming from all types of schools so there's diversity. Oh apparently the IP stream doesn't mix with the O levels at all, they are in the same class for 6 years :(. So at most we'll only meet them around in CCA? Hope this helps :D. Again, not an expert on any school but I hope I won't regret my choice and neither will you! All the best :D!

Haha yeah VJ people really very enthu apparently. And every school I'm sure got various groups of people, the mugger groups, the play play groups, the sleep-in-class-go-home-study groups etc... Agree that it depends who you mix with.
