My father is a pro with strings instruments. I am always his audience whenever he plays a nice song at home or even in our family gatherings. My father never forced me to learn how to play the same instruments but I felt that I am motivated to do the same thing, to learn how to play musical instruments. He never enrolled me in tutorials but I tried to learn on my own. Now I have my own family, I am trying to do the same thing for my kids. I am hoping that the kids would also be inspired to learn how to play a musical instrument without being forced to do so.

Also I don’t think hobbies have to be a formal activity (play in itself is valuable, and children don’t do much of it anymore, so what Rachel572 suggested about leaving art supplies around is a good idea) but if you do want to send them for classes etc., I think it’s important to find teachers who can inspire them and help them to improve at their skills (e.g. if your kid likes music, find a teacher who fosters interest in that, rather than just helping them to pass exams, or if your child encounters a teacher who isn’t supportive, find a new one).
