Here are some suggestions:

1. Apply techniques like
- show not tell
e.g. 视线变得模糊了
- foreshadowing
e.g. 听到了一把熟悉的声音叫着他的名字(......转头一看，原来是.......)

2. Take note of plot connection between pic to pic, and incidents to incidents in same pic (ensure cohesion)

3. Make use of thoughts and conversation to liven up the story
e.g. instead of 小明看到他的成绩后，担心妈妈会骂他，use：
小明心想：糟了，我考得那么差，妈妈知道我的成绩后肯定会大发雷霆！

4. Make conversation (not too much, leave it for the characters who have important points to bring across and when there's opportunities to express tones) more interesting/informative
- can consider the use of rhetorical question, e.g. instead of 你不应该玩火，这样很危险！, use:
难道你不知道玩火是很危险的吗？你太不懂事了！

5. Avoid repeating use of phrase in the same compo
- e.g. for suddenly there's 忽然、突然、顿时、猛然；for immediately there's 立刻、连忙、满上、立即
- e.g. 不久后，过了一阵子, 十几分钟后，一会儿后

6. Use 连词 conjunctions to add variety to sentence structuring/expression
- e.g. 不但......而且；即使......也/还

7. Have a more in-depth conclusion rather than just one or two (usually generic) liners. Some pic compo involve sub theme(s) too - they should also be mentioned in the ending.

Re-post of some suggestions (for students in the 25+/- range) I posted in a reply in 2019 PSLE thread:

For compo training, can try to:
1. get your child to verbally articulate his plans and/or jot down the story flow in point form. [Objective is to plot a coherent story line with little/no loopholes - helps with oral too (and through this can identify which words/phrases the child doesn't know how to express using CL)]
2. practice writing out the climax of the story (using pic 2-4 or 3-5) instead of writing the entire comp (i.e. all 6 pics). [Objective is to describe the events vividly (details + appropriate use of adjectives)]

All the above are aimed at increasing the child's amount of practice without being overwhelmed/put off by the writing of full stories + increasingly boost the child's confidence.

This means that content-wise, you have to write more on feelings, character thoughts, and no story plot gaps, meaning use an explanation for every action). Also, use a phrase at appropriate levels or the severity of action:

看到小明悄悄地在桌子低翻书，老师的眉毛向上挑着，嘴巴却向下例着。她气呼呼地走到小明的面前，压低嗓子说：”你竟敢在考试翻书？这是作弊的行为！你现在跟我到考场外面向我解释！”

(Reason, why I put ‘压低嗓子’ instead of ‘怒吼道’, is because there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that the teacher would scream in front of you in an exam.)

Then compare to this:

看到小明在走廊不小心跌倒，李明顿时不知所措，脸色苍白，冒出冷汗，十分紧张地喊：“救命啊，救命啊！”李明赶紧掏出手机打给救护车。

This sentence was utterly ridiculous. Imagine you see someone accidentally trip, then you go call for help say got people seizure liddat, then after that still got call ambulance? I would think that 李明 is a stupid boy if I ever saw that.

This example I shown is a BIG TIP on scoring well (both English and Chinese). This will help improve your logic gaps and increase your marks a lot as content is a very big thing in Compositions.

I’m so glad MOE has done away with full paper mid-year exam for P5. DS’ school has chosen to test only zuowen (weightage 15%) for the coming WA2 though.

While we have been practising various good phrases & also regularly writing full 6 picture zuowens to train stamina, there seem to be so many types of scenarios/topics that could come out (we have been using Zuowen assessment books).

Would any kind soul happen to know (from experience) what are the most common CL zuowen topics tested in P5? I’d appreciate some help “spotting” the possible topic for the exam. We are running out of time, can’t possibly memorize so many variations & if can save a bit of brain cells (work smart, not just work hard) - would be wonderful.

I have one question about picture composition. There were several occasions when the characters in the pictures were not very clearly illustrated, for example, students argue if a character is a young lady, teenager, middle age women or grandmother. How much will it affect the student's score if he/she mistook the character's age but still keeping the theme intact throughout? In fact, it happened in Chinese oral pictures b4 as well in lower primary. In one case, a man in the picture was illustrated with shoulder length hair and some students thought it was a lady.
