<![CDATA[Zhou's Academic Studio - Discussion]]>Original Title: Chinese: Creative writing or memorising?


We met up a lot of new parents recently and they do share their point of views to improve their children’s writing skills in Chinese, especially for those in P4-P6. Nowadays, children are more well-versed in English than their mother tongue. So writing a Chinese essay could be a difficult task for some children as they are not fluent in spoken Chinese and hence will affect their writing ability in Chinese as well. So from a simple sentence structure to writing up a whole essay, it takes times to practice since young age.

Some of the parents say that memorisation of essays will be very handy. Memorising good phrases are also very helpful. No doubt, they are, but to a certain extent. How about if what your children have memorised are not tested in their assessments? Effort not paid off, they may feel demoralised and may lost motivation to learn Chinese
So emphasizing on writing the content is more important afterall. We have to encourage the children to be more creative in writing their own content. Creativity can be cultivated through questioning techniques as to inspire them to think more in-dephtly.

I have a couple of students, who copy down a lot of good phrases and put them everywhere in their essays in order to make their essays “look good”. In terms of the content, the story line (especially the pictorial essay) is quite empty, they only illustrated the story in a few sentences and then make conclusion in the last paragraph. Comparing to other students, who do not copy a lot of good phrases, but writing their own content and story line with their own words and different writing techniques, these essay have earned more credits.

The different techniques should be applied in composing a well-structured essay.

My boys went to this ctr.
Only some teachers are passionate and good. There are 2 particular teachers who are passionate and earnest to help my Ist boy. Under these teachers, my boy scored pretty good in his Ist year. However in the following year, we cannot follow the same specific teacher due to teacher's different timeslot and the teacher needed to go to another location. His performance then dropped. Before we puled out, the ctr apologized for not able to help much. So I can say it is very much also dependent on the teachers as well.

Also the notes are somewhat messy.....do take a look at a few weeks of material to make an assessment. However....if the teachers are good, the teachers will be able to deliver whatever materials.

We have since dropped from this ctr after staying for a good 2 years. Looking back, the ctr has a good class size. But very much depends on the teachers.

ZAS is good in the sense that the classes are very small, so your dc gets a lot of help and attention. I didn't join them for pri sch, but did sign up for their holiday workshop in K2 I think. I'm pleased with their materials and ds learnt a couple of good idioms and phrases that he didn't from TH (we were still with TH before switching to Jiang). DS came home to tell me he loved ZAS holiday workshops and wanted me to sign him up for their regular classes for P1 but I didn't. I didn't because I spotted some Eng annotations in ds' worksheets. I don't know if it's cos the teacher was afraid her preschool kids wouldn't understand her, so she took the liberty to give some bonus translations to help them understand some Chinese idioms better

Their materials, in terms of structure, are quite similar to Hua Cheng's.

The time schedule is every Tuesday 5 to 7pm (confirmed class) or Friday 5 to 7pm (pending).


For Novena Branch will be every Wednesday 3 to 5pm.

This course will include skills in Reading Aloud, 4-steps-methodology to describe scenarios in Picture Description and finally, how to be more eloquent in the Conversation.

This will be an intensive Oral Skills Enrichment Course, comprises of 10 lessons. This course will equip your child with most of the essential skills in Oral test as well as to boost confidence within your child. Yes there is P6 class for regular class as well as holiday classes. Since it is a new class so you can choose your own timing.

For Physics only available at Novena branch as the particular teaching only conduct classes over there. She is the only science teacher, Ms. Kate, her sec 3 class for both pure physics and chem is on Sunday 1230pm and tue 430pm. 2 hours each lesson. Thx

Hi kyp71,

The maximum class size is 8 students per class for P6.

Our classes are ranged from k1 to Sec 4.

In case you need the course fee, is $505 for 11 lessons. Now if register from 1st May to 10th May, $30 course fee will be waived.

Hi Kattay,

Thank you for the enquiry.
As we are forming new classes, maybe you can let me know your preferred timing. We have Wednesday and Thursday which are scheduled tentatively at 5 pm.

For oral classes, will be scheduled on Wednesday or Thursday too. Will be 3 to 5pm. Again, you may let me know your preferred timing, so that we can arrange with other students.

The fee for Compo, Compre and oral class for P3 is $445 for 1 term.
The oral is $400 for 10 lessons.

Hi Lovinglife,

Thx for pointing out. If all the students for the specific class is writing only 1 pix we will accommodate that, until they are good and sound writing the 1 pix Compo then we will switch to 4 pix Compo.

From our experience writing 4 pix Compo will benefit the students more as they can write more contents and better sentence structures. Also build up their confidence level to write Compo.

So not to worry. 😄
