Thank you so much!

Hi, perhaps i can share what we do in my centre which is located in Sengkang, Compassvale Walk.
Our centre is purely a before and after school care service for primary school students.
For those who come to the centre in the morning (opens at 7am, closes at 7pm on weekday and 7am to 2pm on Sat), it is not compulsory to take a shower in the centre bcos the kid is likely to be fresh and clean coming directly from home. Programme wise, there will be reading time, playtime, a tea-break,followed by Studytime ( mostly doing assessment works and drilling their English and Chinese spelling bcos the kid would have already done his homework the night before). This is followed by shower ( optional) and lunch before going off to school. My staff will see the kids up the school bus. Almost all school buses pass by our centre, even those from Holy Innocent, CHIJ Hougang, Roysth, MeeToh n etc.

For the afternoon session, we fetch students from Sengkang Primary. Other students come in by school bus which will stop by our centre. It is compulsory for the students to take their shower. Reason is obvious - they smell. :!: :!: :!:
This is followed by lunch, reading, studytime ( 1 and 1/2 hours, doing homework first, then assessment works), an hour nap (unless back from CCA, remedial or supplementary classes), tea-break and then playtime (provided homework and assessment target are completed). From 6.30pm onward is home sweet home.

For showering purpose, students leave their soap and shampoo in the Centre. However, they are required to bring clean clothes and bath towel everyday.
For morning session, parents can pick up their kid's dirty clothings and put in a clean set of clothings and towel by the next morning when they send their kid to the centre. They can leave his slippers on the shoe rack allocated to him. As for the afternoon group, the parents can leave a clean set of clothings in the centre in the morning or when coming to fetch their kid. The parents or kid will of course bring the dirty clothings with them upon leaving the centre.

For studytime, we will supervise and help the kids with their homework. They are required to do centre's assessment books which we will mark and expect them to do correction not only in the book itself but also in a correction book. Otherwise, some kids will just blindly copy the correct model answers in the assessment book.

Hope this helps a little to explain the routines of a child's life in a centre. Of course other centres may vary in their mode of operation.

Unfortunately you live in Pasir Ris. They will either wear their own uniform or just put on a tee with school skirt or short. Depend on the children or parent.

After my DH drops her off at pri sch, he will drop by the BASC (actually DD's old CCC that also provides the BASC service) and leave her change of clothes and towel there. The BASC teacher picks DD and the other children up from the pri sch (special arrangement with the pri sch) when they are dismissed. This is feasible since the BASC is very near the pri sch.

DD will have her lunch and shower and do her homework and any other work assigned by the BASC teacher. It's like attending half-day CC for her.

I don't know about children in the PM session since this BASC takes in mostly children from DD's pri sch and it is a single session sch. I was lucky that her previous CCC has BASC and it's an \"enhanced\" version. There is a designated teacher who supervises them (their max. capacity is 16, I think) and we pay for assessment books that the teacher marks. The teacher also helps with spelling revision. They also get outdoor play and go on excursions with the rest of the CCC during the sch holidays. However, I think they only accept children who used to be with them and/or children who are from the neighbourhood sch nearby.

Don't give up on SC yet. What I described are the basic services provided by SC. There are many SC now, especially set up around pri schs, so competition is tough among them. Some SC do provide healthy lunches, shower and nap, and bring the children out for field trips occasionally. Besides academic work, the teachers may also plan/provide other activities for the children to \"unwind\" like board games, I think.

You just have to scout around and try your luck. SC tend to be fully booked around this time to end of the year as parents get confirmation from schs about their children's P1 registration so you have to start early and work fast. Go to your son's sch and ask if the sch knows of any SC in the area. Some Sc may even advertise (either in the sch with permission or the staff stand outside the gate) on orientation day for P1. Take a walk around the sch and see if you can find any SC on your own. (In newer estates, they may even be underground in the \"emergency shelters\".) Observe them and their patrons subtly and make your choice. You can even try to chat with the parents/grandparents who come to pick their children up but do this subtly. If they satisfy your requirements, approach them for more info.

Good Luck!

schellen

Reply to Student Care vs Before/After Student Care on Fri, 28 Aug 2009 14:51:40 GMT

Hi Schellen

Thanks for sharing.

I didn't know that there is a difference between student care and BASC.

From what you have mention earlier on. Student Care (SC) is different from Before and After School Care (BASC).

SC:
- Teachers may be ex-teachers.
- There will be supervision of work and extra coaching/work may be given like in a tuition centre. (It’s like having tuition on various subjects daily.)
- Lunch, nap and shower may or may not be provided.
- Applicable to children from P1 to P6.
- Good SCs may even hire a counsellor.

BASC:
- A "class" provided by a Childcare Centre (CCC), along with their other classes like PG, N1, etc.
- Usually only open to children who graduated from their K2 class or children who still have siblings in the CCC.
- Meals, shower and nap will be provided.
- May not have a designated teacher in-charge of them.
- May not have supervision of nap, homework, etc.
- May only accept up to P3/4.
- The CCC’s priority is the younger children so their resources, time and space will go to these children first.

Which one are you looking for?
