A 12-year-old student was knocked down by a car at a zebra crossing outside his school on Tuesday afternoon.

The Secondary 1 student from Saint Andrew's Secondary suffered injuries to his elbow and back.

He was put under 24-hour observation, said Mr Liang Sea Fong, the school's communications liaison officer.

Mr Liang said a teacher from the school who saw the accident called an ambulance, informed the boy's parents and the school.

We drivers must exercise extra care around school zones. After a couple of close shaves, my foot is always ready to hit the brakes when I see school kids nearby.

Same here. My foot is off the acceleration pedal when I move into school zone. You won't know when a small kid is going to zoom across your car. Or worse, a group of kids!

I see a lot of kids walking on the roads fiddling w their handphones and wearing earphones. I think it is dangerous as they are not paying full attention to the surroundings ie careless drivers, cyclists, etc. The earphones blasting their fave music makes then oblivious to shouted warnings.

My daughter's teacher told the class that they may look stupid when they raise the hand towards the vehicles and cross the road. And also told the class that it is better to be stupid than dead. How true it is![/quote]Please tell the children that at least one driver doesn't think this way. I am always happy to see kids raise their hands to cross. It shows they have been inculcated with some knowledge on road safety. Not that those who don't are ignorant about road safety but we can't tell Mah....[/quote]

Another area to remind your kids to be careful is at MOELC Bishan, especially at dismissal timing.....lots of cars and the students crossing without a care....2 weeks ago saw a hci boy was nearly hit by a car when he crossed the road just as the car was moving forward......

I think the kids tend to chitchat with each other whilst walking so there is less attention to the vehicles.

Does the road and area have those \"school zone\" signboards and road markings? Can't remember.

Actually, are these signboards and road markings done near ALL schools? If not, LTA should have this done at all schools.

The crossing right outside the school is traffic-light controlled.


I’ve always educate my son, to watch that the vehicles really stop, even if the pedestrian has the right of way, be it zebra crossing, or at traffic light.

I agree too. But accident at zebra crossing is a worrying thing esp when we ask our children to walk home on their own.

The zebra crossing at the traffic junction of Jln Jurong Kechil and Upper Bt Timah is also an accident waiting to happen area, especially in the morning after drivers dropped off their children at the school.

I am most afraid of drivers in the morning...they are like sleepy heads. For this reason, i walked my son to school even though it is just 5 min away...explored different paths but no matter what, there is this fear.

Drivers now don't seem to know how to apply brakes :mad:

Some drivers simply do not know when to step on the break.
