Thanks for your interest in our courses. We have the syllabus for the new PSLE and have prepared all our levels, especially our current P5s who will be sitting for the new PSLE syllabus next year, with materials to familiarise them.

On the idea of reading storybooks in hope that these will transfer to the skill of creative writing, I agree reading is helpful. However, if the child is not reading actively (with the intention of picking up writing skills from there) then you may not always see the transference. We have a holiday course - Active Reading- which can tune in a child to this. You might want to consider it? It's basically a mini-literature lesson for primary kids. They have to read three books before coming to class and we explore character traits, plot and vocabulary for setting details during the lessons - this way, the benefits of the book are highlighted to the kids and they end up reading actively!

For Creative Writing, like you asked about, we have Story Writer - an intensive course for holiday programme where the kids write one story each day in the week of 6 lessons and at the end of the course, they've a booklet of short stories they've written. For P5 and P6 we focus on a different skill each day of the course - eg: setting details, characterization, plot twists....put together, this set of skills enables any writer to make a simple storyline chocablock with vivid vocabulary and details.

We do have a term time course which teaches creative writing, comprehension and grammar skills as well, and this runs through the academic year. Do we have space in our classes? Yes- it depends on which time slot you're looking at.

My son is in Primary 5 with ACS this year.

Form P1 to P4 he had done fairly well but he is struggling with composition and comprehension for Primary 5.

I was under the impression that if he reads widely, which he does, he will be able to do well for his compositions. However this is not the case. I realise that there are many technieques on teaching compositions.

Can you share with me, how do you teach composition. Are you all using the new syllabus and the old syllabus?

I am keen to enrol my son. What are the vacancies?

Here's updating everyone that we are closing the branch at Eastgate and merging our classes with Tanglin centre's.

It's been great at Katong but due to a need to pool resources of our precious teachers and enable a bigger number of options for parents to choose from, we think it works better in the long run this way.

At K1 the little ones are given an opportunity to read especially with slight vocabulary. We work more with the meaning of what they are reading. Those who join our K1 classes have already learnt to read in kindergarten so our approach focuses more on meanings- semantic meaning and lexicon meaning.

The students do some writing, with a short composition as an end-goal. To make the activities engaging, there’s colouring and art included for a more tactile experience for the kids.

The class size is limited to 6 students per teacher so the students can have more personalised attention.

Glad to know he had good fun! For the soft spoken and shy, we make it a point that no one gets away without speaking up at least once in every class! This is done through all the games we play in tackling the objective of the lesson every week. So, all group members have to contribute, and this includes verbal contributions.

We have a different oral focus each term as well. Last term, we did the Pick and Tell which was to talk non-stop on the spot all about an object they randomly drew out of a bag. The kids had to brainstorm and keep talking at the same time. This taught them to think on their feet and keep their audience entertained at the same time. They take turns to do this oral time -usually one opportunity in a term.

This term, it's reading aloud with expression and good pace. They will pick a page or two of their choice and come ready to demonstrate good reading to the whole class.

Apart from this, one lesson per term, usually the last, is devoted to oral practice as well. It can be in the form of giving verbal directions to the nearest mall or an exposition on why they think they are are the best group in the class. It can even be about proving a point which they believe in- having to speak with conviction and supporting their argument with evidence.
