Italy announces first case of SARS-like coronavirus

(Reuters) - Italy reported its first case of the SARS-like coronavirus on Friday, a 45-year-old man who had been travelling in Jordan, the health ministry said.

The patient was in good condition and was being monitored in isolation, the ministry said in a statement. He was admitted to a hospital in Tuscany with a high fever, a cough and breathing difficulties.

A resident of Italy with foreign nationality, the man recently spent 40 days in Jordan where one of his sons was suffering from an unspecified flu.....

SARS-like virus has killed 30 of the 50 people who contracted it

The World Health Organization has announced three new deaths from a new virus that has alarmed health officials in the Middle East and Europe since it was first discovered last year.

The organization has now confirmed 50 cases of what it calls Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS. Thirty of those patients have died.
Those numbers are cause for concern. The MERS virus is a coronavirus, which is the same type of virus responsible for the common cold as well as SARS, but less than a tenth of the people who fell ill in the SARS epidemic of 2002 and 2003 died. The new avian influenza virus spreading in China, known as H7N9, has resulted in death in a quarter of known cases, while the more well-known bird flu strain, H5N1, kills about half of those who are infected, according to The New York Times. It’s still too early to say whether the MERS virus is more dangerous than these other viruses, since many more people could have been infected without developing severe symptoms......

GENEVA: Two Saudi health workers have contracted the deadly coronavirus from patients, marking it the first evidence of transmission in a hospital setting, the World Health Organization said Wednesday.

\"This is the first time health care workers have been diagnosed with nCoV (novel coronavirus) infection after exposure to patients,\" the WHO said in a statement.

The two health care workers were among six new cases announced by the Saudi health ministry on Tuesday.....

GENEVA: The World Health Organization on Tuesday revised up the death toll from the SARS-like coronavirus from 18 to 20 worldwide, but said the two additional fatalities in Saudi Arabia were old cases.

\"These are two deaths which are retrospective. They're from an earlier outbreak,\" WHO spokesman Glenn Thomas told reporters in Geneva, without providing further details.

Earlier Tuesday, the Saudi health ministry said four more cases of the SARS-like virus had been detected in the kingdom, bringing the number of cases there to 28 out of a global 38 cases.

While the virus has been deadliest in Saudi Arabia, where 15 people have died, cases have also been reported in Jordan, where two people have died; Germany, where one person has died; Britain, where two people have died; and France, where two patients are now in hospital in the northern city of Lille.

The virus is a cousin of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which triggered a scare 10 years ago when it erupted in East Asia, leaping to humans from animal hosts and eventually killing some 800 people.

Three new cases of SARS-like virus in Saudi Arabia

GENEVA: Three new cases of a new SARS-like virus have been detected in Saudi Arabia, the World Health Organisation reported on Friday.

\"The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia has informed WHO of an additional three laboratory confirmed cases of infection with the novel coronavirus (nCoV),\" the UN body said in a statement.

\"They are currently in critical condition,\" it added.

The organisation said the latest report brought to 27 the global total of laboratory confirmed cases, including 16 deaths.

The virus was first detected in mid-2012 and is a cousin of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which triggered a scare 10 years ago when it erupted in east Asia, leaping to humans from animal hosts.

hCoV-EMC stands for human coronavirus-Erasmus Medical Centre, after the Dutch health institution that identified it.

The mysterious killer virus has been deadliest in Saudi Arabia and the other cases were reported in Jordan, Germany and Britain.

Researchers believe the virus can be transmitted from human to human, although such occurrences appear to be uncommon.

Five die of SARS-like virus in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia's health ministry has said that five Saudis have died from a new SARS-like virus and that two more are being treated in an intensive care unit.

In a statement cited by the Saudi SPA agency late on Wednesday, the ministry said that all the deaths occurred in the Ahsaa province in the oil-rich eastern region of the kingdom, according to the AFP news agency.

Known as novel coronavirus or hCoV-EMC, the virus was first detected in mid-2012 and is a cousin of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which triggered a scare 10 years ago when it erupted in east Asia, leaping to humans from animal hosts.

The health ministry said it was taking \"all precautionary measures for persons who have been in contact with the infected people ... and has taken samples from them to examine if they are infected\".

However, the ministry gave no figures for how many people have been examined to see if they have the lethal disease.

Sixteen people have now died from 23 cases detected in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Germany and Britain. Riyadh has accounted for most of the deaths, with 11 people, including the five new fatalities.

Coronaviruses cause most common colds and pneumonia, but are also to blame for unusual conditions such as SARS which killed more than 800 people when it swept out of China in 2003.

The new virus is different from SARS, in that it causes rapid kidney failure.

The strain is shrouded in mystery, and the World Health Organisation does not yet know how it is transmitted or how widespread it is.

A 73-year-old Saudi man died in Germany in March from the lethal new virus.

He had been travelling in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia before falling ill, and was transferred to Munich from Abu Dhabi on March 19.

H7N9 bird flu spreads to central China's Hunan

SHANGHAI: China's deadly outbreak of H7N9 bird flu has spread to the central province of Hunan, local health authorities said Saturday, the third announcement in three days of a case in a new location.

A 64-year-old woman in Shaoyang City, who developed a fever four days after coming into contact with poultry, was confirmed to have the virus, the Xinhua state news agency reported.

It follows the first confirmed cases in the eastern province of Jiangxi on Thursday and the southeastern province of Fujian on Friday.

More than 110 people in mainland China have been confirmed with H7N9, with 23 deaths, since the government announced on March 31 that the virus had been found in humans. Most cases have been confined to eastern China. The island of Taiwan has also reported one case.

A Chinese expert earlier this week warned of the possibility of more cases in a wider geographical area..........

SHANGHAI - China's deadly outbreak of H7N9 bird flu has spread to a province in the country's south, the government said on Friday, marking the second announcement in two days of a case in a new location.

Taiwan confirms first H7N9 bird flu case outside China

TAIPEI: Taiwan on Wednesday reported the first case of the H7N9 bird flu outside of mainland China.

The 53-year-old man, who had been working in the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou, showed symptoms three days after returning to Taiwan via Shanghai, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said, adding that he had been hospitalised since April 16 and was in a critical condition.

\"This is the first confirmed H7N9 case in Taiwan who was infected abroad,\" Health Minister Chiu Wen-ta told reporters.

The patient said he had not been in contact with poultry or eaten under-cooked birds or eggs while staying in Suzhou, Chiu added.........

New bird flu case found in northeastern China

BEIJING — A man in the northeastern Chinese province of Shandong has been infected by a new strain of bird flu, the first case found in the province, state news agency Xinhua said today, bringing the total number of infected victims in China to 105.

The H7N9 virus has killed 20 people in China. But it is not clear how people are becoming infected and the World Health Organization (WHO) says there is no evidence of the most worrying scenario - sustained transmission between people......

Many schools are sending their students to China this June. I am worried about the ones going, and I am equally concerned when they come back to school.

Schools/ MOE and parents are usually very careful. If there are outbreak in surrounding area, I think they will call off those trips. Kids' school was planning for Japan but due to the earthquake, radiation, etc... they dropped the idea.

The school is planning a trip to HK at year end for some competition/ exchange.... Wonder if due to outbreak they will cancel it.

Frankly... for me to go to Shanghai for business trip now, I am also feeling :nailbite: One of my colleagues had flu after coming back from China and had to go through 2 course of antibiotic. Heard her family got it too. Subsequently another who didn't go but is close to this person got it and she is on mc.

Dd was having stomach flu recently and she probably got it from her friends. Doc said it is airborne.
