Thirty of those patients have died.<br />Those numbers are cause for concern. The MERS virus is a coronavirus, which is the same type of virus responsible for the common cold as well as SARS, but less than a tenth of the people who fell ill in the SARS epidemic of 2002 and 2003 died. The new avian influenza virus spreading in China, known as H7N9, has resulted in death in a quarter of known cases, while the more well-known bird flu strain, H5N1, kills about half of those who are infected, according to The New York Times. on Thu, 02 May 2013 14:50:18 GMT]]></title><description><![CDATA[<p><b><b>Five die of SARS-like virus in Saudi Arabia</b></b><br /><br /><br />Saudi Arabia's health ministry has said that five Saudis have died from a new SARS-like virus and that two more are being treated in an intensive care unit.<br /><br />In a statement cited by the Saudi SPA agency late on Wednesday, the ministry said that all the deaths occurred in the Ahsaa province in the oil-rich eastern region of the kingdom, according to the AFP news agency.<br /><br />Known as novel coronavirus or hCoV-EMC, the virus was first detected in mid-2012 and is a cousin of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which triggered a scare 10 years ago when it erupted in east Asia, leaping to humans from animal hosts.<br /><br />The health ministry said it was taking \"all precautionary measures for persons who have been in contact with the infected people ... and has taken samples from them to examine if they are infected\".<br /><br />However, the ministry gave no figures for how many people have been examined to see if they have the lethal disease.<br /><br />Sixteen people have now died from 23 cases detected in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Germany and Britain. If there are outbreak in surrounding area, I think they will call off those trips. Kids' school was planning for Japan but due to the earthquake, radiation, etc... they dropped the idea.<br /><br />The school is planning a trip to HK at year end for some competition/ exchange.... Wonder if due to outbreak they will cancel it.<br /><br />Frankly... for me to go to Shanghai for business trip now, I am also feeling  :nailbite: One of my colleagues had flu after coming back from China and had to go through 2 course of antibiotic. Heard her family got it too. Subsequently another who didn't go but is close to this person got it and she is on mc. <br /><br />Dd was having stomach flu recently and she probably got it from her friends.
