For example, if you want your child to learn to spell the world \"stairs,\" you can do it like this:

S
ST
STA
STAI
STAIR
STAIRS

You may also use flashcards to represent each letter of the word (for small and simple words) to add more visuals for your child.

faeesperas

Reply to How to teach spelling??? on Mon, 25 Feb 2019 14:43:20 GMT

For Chinese, my boy used to struggle until one day I told him that writing Chinese words is like drawing (he likes drawing). All we have to do is go through the spelling list, sound the words out segment by segment in phonetic way, even unknown words are easy to tackle. Some kids do not take to phonics, and there are other ways to read and spell (using sight words and memory). Kids who don't take to phonics but are only taught that way will be inhibited from reading and spelling well because they get 'stuck' in the decoding-encoding. Also, as words encountered get more varied, reliance on phonics will decrease and other ways will be needed as well. What is it your child needs work on? Short vowels? Blends and digraphs? Long vowels? etc. When you have worked that out, give your child a spelling list with words of that ‘feature’.

For example if your child needs work with long vowels, you may choose to begin with ‘long a’. His/her spelling list might include words like rain, chain, mane, obey, stray, play, etc.

Focus on one ‘feature’ at a time. I find word sorts work really well. Cut each word out and have your child sort it to the correct heading. For example ‘chain’ would go under the heading ‘ai’, whereas ‘mane’ would go under the ‘a_e’ heading.
