<![CDATA[Your grandson got beaten and I want $300,000]]>Sounds like Crime Watch, right?


This morning, my MIL received such a call.

She panic, dialled my mobile phone, cant get through (dunno what number she dialled).

She called my SIL who in turn called me. She was on her way to MIL house to pick her up to go to her place this morning. I called my elder boy on his mobile phone. Luckily it was recess and he picked up the call.

It could not be my younger boy bcos I sent him to school this morning.

All this time, the caller was still on the phone.

MIL has 2 telephone lines at home. One engaged with the caller, one she was told not to pick up.

We called and called.

Finally she picked up the call and whispered into the handset.

I blasted at her for not picking up the call. We were worried she might fall prey to the scam.

True enough, MIL was in shock and was about to do what the caller suggested: go meet at somewhere with her NRIC and bank passbook.

I suggested to her to make a police report. Anyone knows what police contact number to call to make this report? not 999, right?

I received a call 3-4 yr ago first saying that they are a HK company doing a survey, asked my name (to which I gave a false one), plus a few other inconsequential questions. Then couple months later, received another call asking is i was <the false name i gave previously>, then said congrats, it’s a lucky draw in KL and i won, asked me to go over to collect the prize. I played along and said i’m busy, and he said he’ll call back again. Then later really did and said prize very good, must go, i said too far, got meeting, can’t go…

Then I reported to police on the web site, hoping that they will at least try to locate the number and do something about it. In the end, police didn’t even contact me to ask for more info…

I have gotten the chinese prc caller, to which my answer was to give her mutterings in broken tamil. Another time someone called to say they are calling from the police station (supposed to send me into a panic?) to which I went \"Hello, auntie, I work at the police station also. Sure you called the right person?\" Hung up!


This is what I always tell my maid \"If anyone called, asking for money, or offering anything free, or saying they are from police station - I no understand - and put down the phone.\" My brother had an Ah-Long called his house and after 30 mins on the line, the maid had managed to tell them the profession of the adults, where my brother last went to for his business trip (they were at the airport at that time), how many kids at home, what age, what time take school bus... :slapshead: :stupid: :slapshead: :stupid:

MIL got a similar call a couple of years back. The caller claim that DH was in an accident and need money for medical attention. MIL panicked cos DH was overseas then and she was worried that it could really be the case. But being one who is totally reliant on FIL and DH she called FIL who was still around then. Luckily FIL knows about such scams and told her to ignore especially since the call came in through the land line that they hardly use and could not even quite remember the number. Any emergency contact numbers are our mobile numbers.

Even then, MIL said it totally unsettled her, even with FIL’s assurance, she said her hands were shaking and heart feels like it was going to jump out of her chest anytime. She only felt better when she finally heard from DH.

Cant afford district 9 lah.

I dun think these scam callers really think $300k is easily coughed up by S'poreans.

MIL called me earlier, said her heart still skips a beat when she recalled this morning incident. Btw, MIL wears a pacemaker. Thank God, nothing happened.

These days they call through handphone too. I once received a call to say my grand daughter was kidnapped. I almost burst out laughing becos I wasn't even married then! I was in a bad mod so I told the caller - 你搞错了，我只有孙子，没有孙女。

Maybe they are waiting for the victim to bargain....

I suspect they got the number from records of someone called her MIL from China... I started to get some calls from PRC beijing rolled tongue type of Mandarin speaking calls (after my hubby called me years ago from Shanghai... someone in the telecom sell the called foreign number) to sweet talk me into all kinds of scamming lottery, lucky draws, money transferred/inheritance waiting for me to claim etc... bo liaou!
