It is expensive but the soup is very sweet and tasty.<br /><br /><br />I will stir fry the fish meat/bones with ginger, sliced tomatoes and whole garlic first before boiling them in water.  I also fry chopped onions, garlic and ginger and add these to the soup before drinking.  The chopped onion, ginger and garlic is essential to give the soup some "fragrance".  Store-bought fried shallots do not give the same effect.<br /><br />So far, I have tried using batang fish meat and some other types of fish bones.  My final conclusion is, in order of priority:<br /><br />1. threadfin<br />2. batang</p>
