If your son likes Shakespeare, there is a Chinese website where you can watch videos of BBC productions of the plays. The good thing about videos is that you can fast forward the boring bits! The only snag is that the titles are all in Chinese. If you want, I can look for the link.

If your son likes Shakespeare, there is a Chinese website where you can watch videos of BBC productions of the plays. The good thing about videos is that you can fast forward the boring bits! The only snag is that the titles are all in Chinese. If you want, I can look for the link.

Believe it or not. Shakespeare was part of my bedtime story when I was like 7 or 8 yrs old. Not the original version, but my dad got me the illustrated version or Romeo & Juliet, Merchant of Venice, Midsummer Night's Dream, King Lear, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Hamlet and Taming of The Shrew. That got me started on Shakespeare's works.

By the time I was doing Lit in Sec sch, I was familiar with most of his more popular works. But memorising all those quotes and soliloquy and monologues in the English of his era was a real pain.

Traditional western operas are usually not in English, and many are tragedies. He might try Gilbert & Sullivan's comic operettas like \"Mikado\" and \"Pirates of Penzance\". They're quite light and amusing.


I didn't like the film version of Les Mis as I found the standard of the singing rather low. I'm not sure I'd classify is as opera either.

Yuh boi. Shakespeare still gives me nightmares with all the memorisation of the verses. The only thing I remember is the beginning of the 3 witches chant in Macbeth \"Bubble bubble toil and trouble\". That's it. And only because it was catchy. Everything else is too painful to recall :razz:
