To clarify, those who did O level HCL can use their O level HCL grade for computation. A1/2 is considered an A at JC, B3 a B, B4 a C and so on. D7 is an S.

Does the one H1 computation refers strictly to GP? If the student already scores well for H1 chinese or PW, can he take the risk to focus less on GP?

Nay, H1 in the computation does not refer to GP.

A-level grades are calculated on a lettered grading scale (A, B, C, D, E, S, U). These are then converted into points. Your 3 H2 content subjects, 1 H1 content subject (or another H2 subject if you take 4 H2s) and H1 General Paper and PW are taken into account. Note though, that your weakest H2 subject, if you take 4, will be counted as a H1.

For the H2 subjects:
A = 20
B = 17.5
C = 15
D = 12.5
etc

For the H1 subject (or your worst H2 subject) and General Paper
A = 10
B = 8.75
C = 7.5
D = 6.75
etc

H1 Chinese/O Level Higher Chinese are most of the time, not calculated into your final points score, unless you take related courses in Uni. H3s are not taken into consideration for points counting.

So theoretically, say if a student takes 4 H2s, and scores A for everything except 1 of them, he would get:
(20 x 3)[H2] + (7.5)[Weakest H2] + 10 (GP) + 10(PW) = 87.5

So in sum, no! Furthermore, a good GP grade is highly necessary as a prerequisite to most good Uni courses, such as law. And GP is the subject that is most relatable and applicable to daily life, so why focus less on it?
