To my surprise, she got hooked onto it, and first time in her life, she finished a fairly thick book. I see her reading at th balcony, in her room etc…

I myself was an avid Enid Byton fan when I was younger. Books of the Secret Seven, Find outers series…my favourite. But lots of teachers don’t advocate Enid Byton books, not sure why.

I am going to get some more for her…but realized that these days, quite hard to find a good range.

I bought it courtesy of the $20 book award I got for topping my class, along with some other books whose titles I fail to remember now. Those days books costs like $4 to $5 each, which are VERY expensive at that time (1970s). I remembered how our textbooks cost about $40 per year and I feel so embarrassed to go approach my parents for the money.

Anyway... when I found the Famous Five in the library, Secret Seven seemed so infantile compared with the FF, so I lost interest in the SS. But Enid Blyton remains supreme in my mind in terms of her ability to churn out hundreds of children's books. She has practically touched the lives of every English-speaking child in the world.

ChiefKiasu

Reply to Enid Byton on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 14:55:50 GMT

Heyya guys,

I'm also an Enid Blyton fan.
Was into the Secret 7 stuff too.

Now my kiddie reads them.
Enid Blyton has this new series abt
the Naughtiest Girl In School, at least
i think its new. My kids chubby
cheeks fit into the holes (for their faces) like
buns and paos! Playgroup children adore this
book and nice for picture taking too. Parents
who were on trial during my story hour with
Benedict's books were captivated by how their
children were captivated with the books. I still vividly remember the 1st books I bought with the $20 MPH book prize I won in school - those days you can buy 5-6 books with $20. Enid Blyton totally rocks.

I think our modern teachers just wonder about the relevance of those tales to our children today who are born digital. Remember that there are no cell phones or computers during Ms Blyton’s time. Or maybe today’s kids just don’t like her books.
