It came to ~$570, which is significantly cheaper than i thought. I must either have remembered wrongly what we paid for the study room 1.5 yr ago before moving in, or the price must have come down significantly recently.

It works out to be about $12 psf.

Just thought I’ll share this if anyone else is interested.

The glass in in study room added up to probably a bit more than a car (front & rear windscreens, all windows). So I paid I think around $1K just for the study. I’m considering whether to install for my bedroom too, but haven’t decided.

Like i said in the other post, I did a lot of homework years ago when I got my new car and went scouting for all the solar films, and so felt that I made the right choice choosing the one I did - pretty good specs for a decent price. Not sure whether it’s still the best choice now as my car is 6.5 yr old already.

On the type of tint, if you’re staying in landed or HDB, then yes you can install any type that you want, including those that’s reflective. If staying in condo, be careful about the Management’s guidelines, you probably cannot install too many types (dark, reflective, etc.). I chose one that has good light transmittance (so from outside it does not look much difference from non-coated glass) but almost zero heat transmittance.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

I wish we had done it earlier. We chose the type that not only has a sunscreen layer, but also reflects heat away so the room doesn’t heat up. It is bliss. An added bonus, the neighbours can’t see into our apartment if we close the windows. You will have to get used to the room being a little darker than usual. For us, that was a small price to pay… or rather, it’s not very cheap. We ended up paying below $1000 for the whole house. We have a lot of windows.

Hope that helps.

We are using it almost the whole days when we are in. When not using aircon, we will open up all windows & doors. That’s why it fits us.

The other way is to get an air-circulator fan. It helps somewhat, but if you drive and your car has solar film installed, you'll understand that just by reducing the amount of heat going through the glass is not sufficient, as you also need air circulation (fan) or even cold air (aircon) to reduce temperature further.

If the windows are closed and there is no fan or aircon, heat will build up and even with the best solar film, it's still gonna be hot and stuffy after a long enough time, as there will be radiation and greenhouse effect.

And I'm not sure what film you're considering getting from Amazon, but I'll be worried about the quality and specs of the films for a start. There are i think a lot of installers around probably with not that much to do now, as the number of new cars has dropped significantly and these installers who primarily installs the films for cars would have less biz than during car boom period.

There's some discussion on this in another thread:
http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=56193

atrecord

Reply to Please recommend contractor to do solar film application on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 13:22:25 GMT

sparks:
Is it effective in making the house cooler even by a few degrees? If the room is mostly covered by glass windows, heat (sunlight gives heat too) can build up quickly. If got blinds, can block some of this heat.
