There are four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV1-4) circulating in the world.

How Dengue Spreads

It is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus). Dengue fever is not contagious and does not spread directly from person to person. A mosquito is infected when it takes a blood meal from a dengue-infected person and later transmits the virus to other people they bite.

Symptoms

Dengue Fever usually develops within 4 to 7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Symptoms include:

Sudden onset of fever for 2 to 7 days
Severe headache with retro-orbital (behind the eye) pain
Joint and muscle pain
Skin rashes
Nausea and vomiting
Bleeding from the nose or gums or easy bruising in the skin
Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever/Dengue Shock Syndrome is a severe form of dengue fever that could result in death.

What to Do If You Have Dengue

Please seek immediate medical attention if you suspect you may have dengue.

Treatment for Dengue

There is no specific treatment for dengue or dengue haemorrhagic fever. There is also no vaccine currently available to prevent dengue.

Treatment for dengue is supportive. In severe cases, you may require hospitalisation and aggressive emergency treatment with fluid and electrolyte replacement or blood transfusions.

Precautions You Can Take

To prevent the spread of dengue fever, you must first prevent the breeding of its vector, the Aedes mosquito. The Aedes mosquito is easily identifiable by its distinctive black and white stripes on their body.

It prefers to breed in clean, stagnant water easily found in our homes. You can get rid of the Aedes mosquito by frequently checking and removing stagnant water in your premises.

_____________

Heard an old wives' tales that drinking frog-bittergourd soup can bring down the fever caused by dengue infection. At the A&E, express your wish of being attended by the consultant/specialist/junior doctor… depending on the time of your visit, if its during office hours when the specialists’ clinic is open, you may get to see one within 30mins.

The thing is, with such request, the patient automatically switch to the private patient status, no longer get to enjoy the subsidies… Inclu consultation fees, wards, medicines and all other relevant hospitalization charges…

Once this private patient status is established, the patient no longer enjoy any subsidies in the same hospital in future. So, do ponder over this.

Also, to highlight, as a private patient of a gov hospital, the patient DOES NOT have any privilege to priority queue, as in making appointment for subsequent visits to see the specialists or in A&E.

I went to NUH A&E. When it's our turn to see doctor, i was pretty surprised the room full with 5-6 trainee doctors. One of the trainee doctors, tried to distract my son with his hp when the doctor poking him for the drip. They talked to him to lighten the mood in the room. The next day, this trainee doc even came to the ward to visit ds2
However, i also have to comment that on the 2nd day when a young doctor and nurse came to him at 7am to draw his blood (to ensure his blood count was ok), this young doctor had a hard time drawing his blood. The needle was in there for more than 5min. ds2 was brave not to cry when needle poked him. But having the needle in there for more than 5min, he cried and struggled and the nurse had to hold him. I was so angry and at the same time trying to calm him down.

I guess its all depend on your luck, who was attending the patient at the time.

coolbaby

Reply to Dengue death: Father has sought lawyer to sue TTSH on Tue, 04 Jun 2013 06:08:18 GMT

cherrygal:

firefly38:
Mount Alvernia Hospital..
