I started on a few pages back in Primary 6 and never got beyond that. I loved Jane Eyre, though... I had to read it secretly without my sisters knowing because they would tease me to no end for liking a girly book

I don't think there's much to worry about if kids don't start reading even at K2. I only started reading in Primary 2 and when I got started, I was reading like 2 books a day. Enid Blyton, Alfred Hitchcock, W.E. Jones' Biggles, were my absolute favorites that I kept re-reading. Once you get the kid started, it is going to be hard to get them to put down their books.

However, it is also true that primary schools do expect a certain level of literacy in Primary One kids these days. Knowing how to read simple books by K2 is an advantage. The way to do it is to read to them, and then progress to reading with them. All it takes is some time, patience, and discipline on our part as parents. Another way is to let them watch some family movies and then buy the related books. That was how I got my daughter hooked on reading when she was in P1. She loved the Harry Potter movies and I got her the books which she read voraciously.

ChiefKiasu

Reply to 3.5yr old should know to read what words on Fri, 14 Oct 2016 09:35:43 GMT

:? They will take up a topic, and make up story on their own. This is a good step to build their interest in reading.
They will go on to next stage that's called the Experimental Reading. They will see some words and make up stories. What parents should do is to read the phrases slowly, with some actions to keep their attention and observation. They will then read using memory.
Next will be Early Reading that they read the unfamiliar words slowly and exactly what's on the page. They will be able to express some form of understanding at this stage.
Then we see readers start to integrate more meaning to the reading. This is really around 4 to 5 years old.

Build their interest and foundation to reading at 2+, guide them to build their vocabulary through talking to them and their own story-telling. But as to the words and meanings, parents should only focus more at 4+ to 5 yo.

Hope it helps!

Regards
Ms Soh
The Tots' Classroom

ms_soh

Reply to 3.5yr old should know to read what words on Tue, 21 Jan 2014 03:27:44 GMT

My elder boy just turned 2 years old last month.
