It's a requirement for most of these cameras.

Also, the DVRs do indeed get quite hot. But it is simple to reduce storage requirement - just turn on motion-detection. It will consume a lot less storage. The more expensive cameras have more features in this regard, but even the cheaper ones have some form of motion detection.

My solution is simple. There is an easily accessible switch on the voltage regulator that connects my DVR to the permanent power supply. Just search for "car dvr". Just note that there is significant video quality difference between DVRs that are under $100 versus those at $150 and above. If you are mostly driving in the day, between 8am and 7pm, a DVR under $100 is good enough because the lighting will be good enough for those cameras. I don’t see much of a difference in video quality between those priced at $150 vs $300+ ones. The difference is more in the features offered. So a good option would be to simply buy a $150 one like the FineVu.

Here are some things to look for when purchasing DVRs:

1) Review the sample videos for the cameras before you buy. Things to note would be:
a. Check if you can see the license plate numbers of cars when the car is moving, during the day, and night. Most cameras will work well when stationary, but only the better ones (aka. more expensive) will allow you to somewhat read numbers of cars when moving.
b. Check the night videos. If it is too grainy under street lights, you might want to look elsewhere.

2) Most cameras under $100 that offer 1080p full HD videos are interpolated, ie. the 1080p videos are actually captured and recorded at a lower resolution and then digitally expanded. So it is better to record at a lower, 720p half HD resolution.

3) Even if 1080p videos are advertised, there are constraints on the brand and type of SD card media you use for storing the video. My older $60 DVR only accepts up to 32GB microSDHC cards and works properly (ie without broken videos) with Samsung microSDHC cards and NOT Sandisk cards. If you are having problems with corrupted videos, try changing your media, and record at a lower resolution. And I don’t know of any DVR that accepts 64microSDHC cards, so don’t waste your money buying cards that don’t work.

4) If you are trying to install a DVR that works for parked cars, make sure the solution uses an external battery pack instead of drawing power straight from your car battery. Even though some solutions like the Blackvue involves the installation of a voltage detector that turns off the DVR if the car battery voltage falls below a certain voltage, its effectiveness is dependent on the type of car and battery. You don’t want to end up with a dead battery because of your car DVR. Also, make sure you have large enough SD storage, otherwise your older videos will be overwritten constantly. Your car DVR should also have scene change/motion detection so that it only records when it detects movement.

5) If your car has keyless entry, try to find out where the keyless entry sensor is. The most common place is at the rearview mirror. That would mean you should not install your camera near your rearview mirror, because your keyless entry system will be affected by it due to the interference.
