I didnt read the details.
At times, the blame should not rest solely on drivers. There are some pedestrains who walk as if there are no vehicles on the road, busy chatting using their hp etc. Well, they pay with a hefty price too.

From what I understand, motion detect is only possible when the dvr is powered by its internal battery.

Therefore for those who connect it directly to the car battery, it will be tricked into believing the car is running and will record continuously. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Both the DVRs I have so far do not require power to be supplied through its internal battery for motion detection to work. In fact, motion detection can also be used when the car is running, so that recording will start when the car is moving, but stop when the car is stopped at a traffic light or something where the scene does not change much.

I'm not sure of other cameras, though.

Some DVR require better Class SD card, eg, Class 6 or 10...test out with the SD cards on hand before getting bigger capacity one.


As for a permanent supply to the cam/DVR for detection purpose, I would advise against the idea. 1st you must have a bigger enough SD...I think 10min uses up 1GB and so the 32GB will only yield about 5 hrs of recording.
Secondly, the dvr, being a video capture/processing device, runs HOT! If it's forever switched on, there's no rest for the DVR...plus our VERY day temp...prematured failure of the DVR will be highly possible.
Yes, use at least Class 10 (48Mbps) SD cards. It's a requirement for most of these cameras.

Also, the DVRs do indeed get quite hot. But it is simple to reduce storage requirement - just turn on motion-detection. It will consume a lot less storage. The more expensive cameras have more features in this regard, but even the cheaper ones have some form of motion detection.

My solution is simple. There is an easily accessible switch on the voltage regulator that connects my DVR to the permanent power supply. So I can easily switch on or off the parking mode depending on whether I'm in an unfamiliar or more seedy place or not 🙂 Most times, I switch it off.

Just search for "car dvr". Just note that there is significant video quality difference between DVRs that are under $100 versus those at $150 and above. If you are mostly driving in the day, between 8am and 7pm, a DVR under $100 is good enough because the lighting will be good enough for those cameras. I don’t see much of a difference in video quality between those priced at $150 vs $300+ ones. The difference is more in the features offered. So a good option would be to simply buy a $150 one like the FineVu.


Here are some things to look for when purchasing DVRs:

1) Review the sample videos for the cameras before you buy. Things to note would be:
a. Check if you can see the license plate numbers of cars when the car is moving, during the day, and night. Most cameras will work well when stationary, but only the better ones (aka. more expensive) will allow you to somewhat read numbers of cars when moving.
b. Check the night videos. If it is too grainy under street lights, you might want to look elsewhere.

2) Most cameras under $100 that offer 1080p full HD videos are interpolated, ie. the 1080p videos are actually captured and recorded at a lower resolution and then digitally expanded. So it is better to record at a lower, 720p half HD resolution.

It looks good. I just upgraded to a Blackvue for better video quality and also the ability to selectively leave the video on when parked at some ulu places. It's pricey, but works well.

For those with keyless entry cars, all car dvrs will interfere with the keyless system if installed too close to the sensor (usually behind the rearview mirror). I had to install my blackvue at the passenger side.

I agree that the rear camera is less useful; but I have been tailgate pretty bad these days - vans, lorries, they sped up and keep VERY close to my car rear, and I do feel intimidated. So I ordered one online that comes with both front and rear cameras 2/3 the price of what I get in SGP, but less the warranty. Good for now and peace of mind for me.


And I will sure send the clips of the tailgaters to TP if they cross the line.

Night quality is average, but definitely better than my old cheap DVR. Not grainy.
