Totally agree with the maids nowadays....
But still... To make them pay... Haiz... Looking at their pay and the whole kampong they need to feed... Also v poor thing... If genuinely accidental, then reprimanding them and warning them should be good enough.
If on purpose, might as well change the maid.. Dunno what else they can do.

Well, try to tell me that if after you repeatedly demonstrated the correct way to operate certain equipments and along the process of few months monitoring and correcting the way things are mishandled and yet, equipments still spoilt in the end because the maids can't be bothered to follow simple instruction from the multpile training sessions.


I think in the real corporate world, employees do get fired for repeatedly make the same MISTAKES over and over again.
So please also put yourself in the employers shoes.
Truly agree with you. When u make mistakes more than once, it's not mistake anymore it's a choice... A wrong choice.

I tell my maid that and also she is responsible for the things that she uses. She has to understand that it is in her own interest to take good care of my things or she has to pay the price, there are consequences.


Sometimes, the maid is just dreaming while working, talking on the phone, maybe.

Sometimes, while listening to instructions, she does not understand but lies that she understands…kay kiang type, know it all, feels that she doesn’t have to/doesn’t want to learn. See one time, know how to do everything type.

Sometimes, the maid just cannot be bothered…forcefully turn the knob or yank on something the wrong way and things get broken.

Sometimes the maid just do all this to annoy the employer because she wants a transfer.

I can understand everyones' frustration here when our helpers repeatedly disregard our advices. They will continue to break things and worst will not tell us about it.


One way to deal with this is to delay or do not replace back those equipments that they broke.
For example I had my washing machine and dryer broke down one after the other within couple of months time. I purposely delayed the purchase of the new machines and made her do the washing by hands and drying the clothes by hanging them up in the indoor racks.
She kept complaining of how hard and inconveniences etc etc but that's what happened if you are not careful. Of course it caused us inconveniences as well but no choice if all else failed.

This is an interesting post. Well, my maid had broke more than 10 stuff in my home inclusive of expensive kitchen appliance. I only made her pay once that too just $5 to make her realize that breaking stuff isn't her entitlement. My maid was a thick skinned person, even after paying $5 she broke even more stuff after that till I had stopped buying replacements. So, i guess when we hire a new maid, its best we brief them thoroughly & also list down house rules for them, which should include that any damage caused by her will be bear by her. In this way, she will be careful. Also we should tell them that this things are expensive, at least a sensible person will handle it with care. Just an opinion.

once my ex maid ran to nearby police st when she went out to throw rubbish. Police asked us to pick her bk but we refused,worried she would later jump out fr the car.so we asked the agent to pick her bk.
Agent was furious wf her.At the end,agent no choice but to pick her bk. She thought the police would send her to Indonesia,coz she just wanna come sg to "explore".Agent told me that she was stunned when she went to pick her.

We tried handling the maid problems ourselves but found out, they’ll just take advantage of you. Don’t waste your time and stress out unnecessarily-get agent to solve!

The maids will always have 1 trick after another, having forgotten however good you’ve treated them!

I agree with what you say. When my helper comes, I will be extra careful when dealing with her. I do not want to be accused. If I'm not wrong, I do not think we can dock our helper's pay if they damage our stuff. I rather report to agency.

If I get myself into trouble over issues which can be solved easily, it isn't worth it. I have much more to lose compared to her.

My personal experience included…breaking a new pair of ceramic knife, breaking the pot cover, burning the base of my pot, ‘colour dyeing’ my new shirt. The last draw was she threw away the coffee filter netting of my 1-day old coffee maker. That made me very unhappy because you cannot buy the filter separately. The next day, she came back from her off day with a new coffee maker, which surprised us! Well, at least that showed she really didn’t mean to damage things.
Talk to her and find out why she keeps making the same mistakes may be an avenue out for you. Issue ultimatum only if things do not improved despite reminders.
