Sec 1 honeymoon, sec 2 stress...sec 3 pulling hair...

Sec 3 is like Pri 5 - starting groundwork preparation for O Levels.

My past 2 years were also honeymoon. Next year DS is going to Sec 3, think I have to rebuild my energy to nag at him as he still seems to be extending his honeymoon days!

Yup! sec 1 is like the time when they get exposed to a brand new environment and explore all sorts of different ccas. they should be enjoying life before sec 2 when the stress of streaming comes in lol

I don't agree. I feel my kids enjoy Sec School life better than Pri School. They have more exposure n learn a lot to be independent both in studies n social life.

As what slmkhoo says - its not that bad!!!!!

It's really not that bad! I think we need to encourage kids to go in with high levels of positive anticipation and excitement, and they will do better than if they go in with fear and trembling.

I think if ur ds has an interest in the subject , he will have no problem in getting used to it . The hcl standard in secondary is certainly higher than in primary school . In primary school , my dd had high merit to distinction for hcl , while now that she is in sec 1 , her hcl grades has gone down to low B4 ( 60-61) I think the paper is slightly more difficult and we should keep our expectations low at first.

I suggest you look at his relative performance in class or among his cohort, not the absolute grades. Also the term test results may fluctuate quite a bit depending on the difficulty level of the papers set. As long as he pays attention in class and does his work regularly, most importantly be happy in school, you have nothing to worry.

The difficulty level and standard may seem a big jump to us parents, but our kids have also grown up, so most of them can cope and many can excel.

With a strong foundation set in primary school, I am sure your ds will continue to do well in Sec school. Now enjoy the year-end holiday first. :rahrah:

Yes, its a huge jump from Pri to Sec school, also more subjects but don't worry, they will adjust once they settle into Sec School routine.

Anyone care to share how your Sec 1 DD and DS are coping in the Secondary Schools?
My DD has been very unhappy since beginning of the year. She has been asking to transfer to her Pri School's affiliated Sec school. Seems like she is not coping well socially in the new school and not motivated to study at all.

I told her to try out for a year in this Sec school. More than half a year has gone and things doesn't seem to have improved. Think she missed her old friends. I really hope that she can remain in this school, but am almost giving up after seeing her being so unhappy.

Wonder is this normal? Anyone care to share your experience with your DD or DS?

Is she an introvert who cannot makes friends easily?

for Chinese, my son has been doing badly (he flunked his SA1)...and Art (D7). yest, he told me he got a D for Chinese SA2.
he is doing ok for the other subjects...it has been a very trying year getting him adjusted to 7 subjects. he would know his overall results for the year soon...next year will be tougher with streaming :frustrated:

Is that roughly where you expect him to be? Marks in sec school may be much lower in absolute nos. than in Pr school. Also, the requirements may be different from Pr school, and students may not have fully adjusted yet. For subjects that are new, students may not have got used to what is required yet. As a first recourse, he should ask his teachers for specific advice as to what his weaknesses are and suggestions for improvement. Once you know the weaknesses, you can also tap on others here for specific suggestions, or get tuition if you think it necessary. At sec school, it's best to let the student take the lead to ask the questions and try to self-study, ask others for help etc.
