I saw the way he was behaving and it was really like he was in delivery. His urine was in the colour of teh-o. (Later we found out that it is filled with blood as the stone cut the kidney).

Went to 2 GPs to confirm it was kidney stones and not other kinds of infection or kidney problem. All GP gave were pain killers, and advice to drink lots of water.

Sought the advice from an in-law who also had kidney stone once but he managed to flush it out by drinking water mixed with lemon, and DH did that. The pain ‘traveled’ down to his bladder during the 2 days of drinking lemon drink. The lemon is supposed to help in breaking down the calcium in the stone for it to be flushed out in the urine.

There was no more pain for 2 weeks. Then, DH felt it again, but this time no longer in the kidney. We suspected it was in the uterus. We went to TTS for X-ray and ultra-sound scan, but doc saw nothing.

He was asked to return for further checks and scope. On the day itself, doc found nothing that needed scope (phew!) and he said he felt so paiseh with so many young nurses around seeing his little brother. Anyway, he is resisting the need to do further surgery since he isn’t in pain anymore.

Doc said some fragmented stones may get stuck in his urinary tract after shock wave and this will be very painful for my dad. So he suggested to have the stent right before the suockwave so the stent can direct all broken stones out successfully. Thanks.

He does not feel much discomfort during the procedure and he is fine after 3 days’ MC.

Just to share, my cousin’s husband had an emergency surgey last month because his kidney stones burst inside his body without warning, which caused a lot of pain. My personal take is to get rid of the stones asap while you can. Shock wave surgery is generally safe but of course, given your dad’s age, it will be best to consult the doctor first.
