Without her, there won’t be your existence to meet me." A wise teacher once told me to always respect our own husband’s parents and treat them the way we want our husbands to treat our parents. I have always maintained a cordial relationship with the in-laws. It was my hubby’s idea to move out to get our own house even when we could live under the same roof. I was the one who had to remind my hubby to return calls to his mum when he had missed calls from her. We have the choice to choose how we want to deal with our in-laws. Perhaps by choosing to look at the other side of the coin, we can see light at the end of the tunnel. One day, it will be our turns to be mother-in-laws too. Learn to live for yourself, not for your children. Take time to reflect what do you want out of a relationship before you throw in the towel. Sometimes the answer lies within ourselves, it takes time to sort it out.

I always emphasise that I stay at home to be first and foremost a 'Mum' - I stay home to bring up my kids and make sure they are safe and healthy. I happen to do housework and cooking because I am on the spot and have the time to, and when I need help, the rest of the family is obliged to help. When I find that I am being taken for granted, I will make some comment early on and, so far, they are quite good at taking the hint. SAHM should not allow themselves to be regarded as everyone's servant.

Absolutely agreed!

I always tell my kids:
Hey, be grateful that I'm doing all these for you in the meantime. I don't enjoy cooking or cleaning. Because you're young, I'm helping you out of goodwill. Don't take me for granted and don't push your luck by contributing more mess.

I trained them to do as much as early as possible so that I can do less as soon as possible. We never had a maid. Don't like the idea of a stranger in the house, no privacy. Can't walk around my own house scantily dressed. And obviously I don't intend to be the maid at home.

They change their own bedsheets ever since they were 5 years old. dd1 can cook an entire meal (steam rice, steam dishes, stir fry egg, stir fry cheese tofu, etc). dd1 will prepare milk for dd2 in the morning and they settle their own breakfast. They are supposed to clear the table after meal and dd1 will wash dishes whenever dh is travelling.

I don't yell to get them moving, suprisingly 嗲 works on kids too. Must be gentle la. And I do reward them with their love language. Happen that dh and dd1's love language is words of affirmation. That's easy for me, just have to sweet talk them. dd2 is a little tricky, she's the one sweet talking me. Can't blame her, dd2 inherited my 公主病. However, sweet talk doesn't work on me. My love language is act of service (since I enjoy being served) So get moving, do some work, don't laze there

sleepy

Reply to Tired of marriage-when to let go? on Thu, 05 Sep 2013 07:23:54 GMT

vinegar:
i muz adopt ur methods.....sound very effective...but what if they find outside food taste beta than mine?

Oh boi, that's means I will be more eng :rahrah:

I get bored with my own cooking too so I won't feel offended if they switch menu every now and then with outside food.

However, when I do cook, I expect them to eat. If you cannot get this planning done and executed properly, then you may suffer more after the separation = poor strategy = pointless. Your next major move should be moving towards light and not to another dead corner.

I have shared with you about my second sis who is a perfectionist who groomed 3 GEP kids, and that her whole life is devoted to her family esp her kids. She doesn’t live for herself at all. The last chat I had with her concluded with her resigning to her fate that “My 命 is 如此. I just have to 认命 and continue to slog’.

My sis is now around mid 50s and she has living that kind of life (which is hell in my eyes to have to wake up at 5+ am in the morning, preparing breakfast, driving kids here and there for schools/tuitions/sports/etc, housework, cooking, etc etc) and sleeps at around 11 pm) for 20+ years. Now her kids all grown up but she still slogging for them (and I mentioned before my niece commented her as ‘the siow one’ coz the kids really want her to have some life instead of at home bugging at everyone to work/study hard, etc).

She looks 残 – skinny and ‘dry’ – a look of no 福气 (I hope you are not looking like this!).

There’s no way I can talk sense to her coz she is very stubborn and sort of having the thinking that what she does is correct and maybe to the extent of 伟大.

I see my sis as having depression coz her efforts are not appreciated by EVERYONE at home (coz she so ‘free’ and gets nosy into things that she is not supposed to and so they ‘retaliate’.) I know she has suicidal intention. She has never thought about leaving her family coz as a Chinese helicopter, Divorce is a taboo and 面子重要 and her strong belief that ‘children will sure suffer if parents divorce’).

In 5 to 10 years time, I foresee my this sis may really attempt suicide after her kids got married coz after they marry off (and perhaps will attempt to stay as far away from her as possible with minimal contact), my sis may feel her ‘life mission accomplished’ and there’s nothing more to live for.

I’m experiencing first hand someone close to me like this; someone who seems to enjoy 钻ing牛角尖and refuses to come out. Not that I don’t want to help her but she is too stubborn to listen and so my hands are tied and therefore 无可奈何 (asked her out for dinner for 100 times and probably she will come 1 time and 99 times she will say ‘too busy with housework’, need to fetch this one that one, etc. Forever busy with don’t know what until I also give up see her in every meal gathering).

Just weeks ago my mum called me to tell me that she thought my sis is really siow oredi coz my sis seems to ‘imagine’ things and talks bad about me (something related to I helping my mum and brother to renovate house and I gave them a few tens of thousand as renovation subsidy and she ‘imagined’ I ‘how lian’ and show-off, etc, etc. Somemore she added that I frequently buying dinners also to show off I can afford and so she not interested to ‘受我的恩惠’).

My mum is a wise woman and when she can tell me about my sis is showing signs of ‘siowness’, I tend to believe that her condition is getting worst and I have to control my worry coz there’s no way I can step in to tell her anything at this moment. Here, I am not upset with anything she said coz I also think she is now mentally unsound (we used to be very close when younger and she taught me many things incl how to lay the first pad of my life).

I fear there may come a point when her kids tell her, ‘Mum, I don’t need you! Stop bothering me!’. If there’s such a day, then can see my sis’ world comes tumbling down and 40th storey balcony maybe the spot that she will climb up to…

Sharing this to let you reflect, that if you don’t want to do something for yourself NOW, you may be in a worst condition as you age further (esp during menopause period like my sis, when you may also start to ‘imagine’ things and make till family 鸡犬不宁).

Take care…

PS:
You’ve forgotten my 驴子转磨 story? Now you are the 驴子 that keeps turning around the same spot and 一边不停的转，一边不停的怨. Pls go plan to find a job (the moment you have this positive thought and act on it, something will come and things will change). Of course, you can also choose to be like my sis to continue to be a 驴子 and carry on to 一边不停的转，一边不停的怨 till your final day in life. The choice is always in your hands and so 悲剧 or 喜剧 really is up to you to decide…

PS2:
Take a paper to do some concrete planning:
- what kind of job
- what kind of domestic help you need
- who can help
- how long it’ll take you to arrange for the help
- do up your resume
- estimate when you can start applying
- do up your working clothes wardrobe preliminary
- estimate when you can start work

Ball park above will take about 6 months to materialise if you start to plan NOW…

PS3:
One more to add: my sis doesn’t have sex with her husband for donkey years oredi and I will not fault my brother-in-law if one day we get to know that he 偷吃 outside. You have to also consider your sexual life with your husband. If you keep don’t want to ‘give it’ to him, then one day you cannot really fault him if he strays and if he really strays, then your hurt will be multiplied as compared to now…
