There are many ways to get him interested in picking up a pencil and start writing. Instead of sticking to paper and pencil, get him to doodle in flour, sand, rice or even coloured salt. Start first with his finger then maybe give him a stick to write in. Even during bath time you can make lots of soap suds and start writing in it.

Also check if the pencil given to him is too thin. My child take liquid fish oil that includes excellent sources of omega-3 and omega-6 nutrients which includes DHA, EPA, AA, GLA and pure evening primrose oil. Fish oil helps to maintain brain and eye functions. I find that not only it helps my child in concentration but for having a good memory as well. Fish oil is a must to take because it may help to maintain concentration and brain development.

Limit tv watching to no more than an hour a day. Limit the use of iPad usage too. There is studies debating that watching tv and using iPads can result in a child becoming less able to concentrate for sit down task. I’m sure you can do a search to read up about it. It is too lengthy to post here.

Work on an activity using a timer for 10 mins and encourage your child to complete the task within the time frame. Let your child know that play time will be scheduled after completion of learning. Your child will look forward to learning. Learning does not only involve doing assessment books. It’s too boring to just stick to assessment book. Ask the child what he would want to know and research with him. Keep it simple and fun. Learning is meant to be enjoyable for young children.
If you are really concerned, bring the child to polyclinic to get referral to KKH Child Development Unit to go for further observations. Early intervention works best for children before 7. Don’t delay till it’s too late to seek help for early intervention. How long more can you wait to see improvement when the child is going to Pri 1 in 3 years time. Seek professional help ASAP to rule out any issues that you think your child may have.

He don't want me to hold his hand and write tgt - it's a good sign.. but his writing will be way off the line which is normal I think???

he will take the initiative to do his homework; he will run to me and say \"mama, I wane do my homework\" and he will run to his bag and take out his homework for me to photocopy his homework before we sit down tgt. we are really quite pleased and glad tt he is taking this initiative. but we are just to worried abt his short-lived attention and focusing span. he is gg kindergarten nxt yr, thus the worrying of not able to catch up with other children.

Jedamum, your page mentioned some fish oil.. what kind of fish oil do you give your child? Is it effective? & is there some focusing enrichment courses that we can enrol them to? I tried to search online but it seems lyk those focus lessons are always for those older children

some kids have problems with the regular thin pencils.
i gave my boy fat crayons for tracing homework.
work on his motor skills. some kids dislike writing because it is tiring. finger motor skills include playing with playdoh or even tracing templates just to get them to draw also helps. i also make my own wipe clean book and gave him markers to trace letters, maze, dot-to-dot. routine of 10-15min seat work (including play time at a designated seating area - not on the floor). we do not give him any handheld games (no hp or ipad games; except maybe suduko online) until much later on when he goes onto P1.

i go for the most affordable fish oil! lol. because i gave my boy fish oil since 2.5yo, i give those burstlets form as he could not chew then - i squeezed out the insides for him. now he still takes them. i find that it is useful. you can go and try out some to see which you like.

i am a sahm, so i worked on his attention span. we dont go for any courses. but i go to the library to look for books for my self-reading. we have a shelf of books and craft stuff, so he is free to go there to look for stuff to do.

jedamum

Reply to 4yo unable to focus for more than 10mins. Let him do fun things that stretch his attention, but don't expect him to behave like a Pr school kid when he hasn't even been through kindy.

sharonkhoo

Reply to 4yo unable to focus for more than 10mins. Or he's not interested and just says the first thing that comes to mind? Keep up the repetitions but try to introduce them in the course of normal life and not as a 'lesson', but stop testing him. With enough repetition, they will learn, but kids do get fed up with being quizzed a lot.

sharonkhoo

Reply to 4yo unable to focus for more than 10mins.
