It could simply be that they think what they are doing is sufficient vs trying to keep up with the Joneses. It’s a matter of prioritizing time & money.

It doesn’t really matter what it’s designated as. I also know of people who say their kids go for “enrichment” and not “tuition”. Whatever floats their boat. There are pros and cons to both methods, as well as limitations on whether one would even work in any particular family situation, eg. If some parents cannot teach or both parents are working full time – then option B is less likely to be feasible.

Ultimately, it’s up to the parents to decide what situation is best for their kids. At this age (7-12 yrs), I very much doubt that any kids will study on their own without some pushing or nagging – the “fear factor” likely hasn’t kicked in yet, especially in the lower primary kids.

There are parents who feel bad that their finances are not as good as their peers and they try very hard to make sure that their kids are not disadvantaged.

I have also been amused by parents who try to outdo each other by bragging about how much money they are spending on their children tuition. Once I was having lunch by myself and two young fathers started comparing notes on their preschoolersenrichment classes, throwing names of tuition centre and fees, moaning about how much it cost when there was quite clearly a one upmanship going on.

But it does take time to sift through, collate, familiarise, and then actually use them with the child.

I don’t believe that brand name tuition are necessarily better. I know families that spent thousands of dollars on various tuition since the children were in preschool and the final results were mediocre. The thing was the children did not learn how to learn.

I will say external instructions (teacher/parent/tutor) make up 30-50 percent of the equation, the rest of it is the child’s attitude/aptitude.

You will also realise that this is resulting in those students from families who can afford tuition becoming advantaged in their academic journey. This is somewhat alleviated by programs such as SINDA STEP Tuition and Mendaki Tuition, but a better solution would be a credits scheme for the poor to enroll in paid, higher quality tuition, similar to SkillsFuture. We could classify students by per capita income or household income and provide them grants. This could be a slightly longer term solution. Of course, those who can afford tuition won't recieve any credits.

championrat

Reply to 97% of Singaporean students are enrolled in tuition in 2008 on Sat, 12 Oct 2013 14:56:38 GMT

can’t remember the program I watched on tv last night…it was about tuition in Singapore. this boy in p3 could manage a question using ‘guess and check’ while the host of the program was stumped.
